It is my belief, and the belief of millions of others, that the term "assault rifle" is being used as a term that is inconsistent with the weapons being associated with it. An AR-15 or an AK-47 and any other semi-automatic firearm are not assault weapons. In this I will show how the term assault is an action and not a object, therefore the term assault weapon is not what the American public has been lead to believe and demonize.

its an adjective
Debate Round No. 1

I agree. Assault is an adjective. This makes the action of the person assault not the weapon used.

the action of the person using it would be shooting
Debate Round No. 2

Yes the action is assault but it can also be defensive. When used in an attacking manner it is assault but the same can be said for any weapon imaginable. A gun can certainly be used to assault with but so can tire irons, knives, baseball bats, and anything else including hands and feet of the attacker.

"as"sault ri"fle
a rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use."

many miliatries use AR-15 and AK-47

@shmac thank you. I screwed up in the last round of this debate and didn't post the department of defense definition of assault weapon. I'm still new on this site so that's why I made a rookie mistake. And you're correct about militiaries and what they use.

Mulan is wrong,

"Many Militaries use the AR-15" NO they Don't

Some to many Western Militaries utilize the M4 Platform, the AR-15 is a Semi Auto rifle, while the M4 (decendant of the AR-15 through the M-16) is a direct variant of the M-16 battle rifle that came from the original AR ( Armalite Rifle) 15. The M-4 and M-16 variants have selective fire, while AR-15's are Semi Automatic. Now verbiage and lies told by sellers, braggers, and the media would lead some to assume that all Black tactical looking rifles are M-4's this is not true if it is a SA (Semi Auto) it is an AR-15 if it is a carbine then it is a CAR-15, the difference between the M-4 and the CAR-15 being M-4's are capable of SA, (Sometimes Burst), Full Auto.

Well FTG-Aidrian,

Selective fire is where most media and non-gun owner/users know anything about. In terms of a Military Assault Rifle has multiple firing modes, the M-16 for instance has, Full Auto, Burst, Semi-Auto, and Safe. The Rifles that can be bought in the general market with all background checks and what not have 2 "Modes" Safe and Semi-Auto Legally people without Either having an FFL, Paying and registering with the ATF for a tax stamp or lastly Paying a fortune for the Title II Firearm License (otherwise known as the Class III NFA) one MAY NOT LEGALLY OWN a fully automatic rifle or pistol.

Isn't Assault Rifle a designation given to a specific type of gun? I was under the impression that the term was applied to weapons that met the following:

It must be an individual weapon
It must be capable of selective fire
It must have an intermediate-power cartridge: more power than a pistol but less than a standard rifle or battle rifle
Its ammunition must be supplied from a detachable box magazine
And it should have an effective range of at least 300 metres (330 yards)

Well I wanted to accept, But I am a Gun Lover and use Match Service Rifles in competition. So it would not be a true debate. The only thing I would say though is that I don't think it is so much a problem with the Name bc the original designation was and is indeed AR-15 but it IS IN FACT being Incorrectly assumed that the AR in the designation means Assault Rifle, or Automatic Rifle. Both False, as it is simply Armalite Rifle and the designation simply stuck. Media should in my opinion simply refer to it as a Rifle and would even like it if they added SA Rifle, but they would never do their homework like that. Any item on the planet can be turned into an Assault "insert random Item here" by using it to attack someone (in terms of the stupid and media, if you paint it black too HOLY GOD then you have yourself one true ASSAULT : Pen, Bar of Soap, Car, Shoe, Rope, Knife, Fork, Spoon etc etc insert any item here!)

Thechuck16 speaks the truth. Anti-gun idiots use that word, along with "assault weapon", but don't actually know what it means. For a fire arm to be classified as an assault rifle, it needs to only meet two definitions. 1- it needs to be fully automatic, and 2- it needs to fire a round between that of a pistol, and a full rifle. Obviously a lot of guns meet at least one of those, but not both. The term Assault weapon is completely fictitious. It is a lie. There is no such thing as an assault weapon. As a matter of fact, the Clinton administration in the 90's made it illegal for civilian ownership of assault rifles. So liberals who want assault rifles banned are trying to pass a law that was already passed a little less then 20 years ago.

Reasons for voting decision: This was pretty much a semantics debate which Pro won. Con had the burden of proof and did not give a reason as to why assault rifles are not assault rifles. Pro provided the dictionary definition of assault rifle and it is consistent for the most part with these guns.
