Using gasoline and gas in the engines gives a possibilty to produce a huge amount of energy which makes it work. There is no another source of energy which would work as gasoline or gas fuel. Of course, we can use alcohol or electricity, but the amount of energy would be much less. For example 1 liter of gasoline exists of about 33 490 000 Joels, is there any source of energy which can provide such kind of energy?

First of all, thank you Yerzhan for debating on this very topical theme about the possibility of replacing the gasoline by another sources of energy. Of course nowadays the chances of doing that are much higher than 20-30 years before and after reading some very interesting articles about the alternatives of the gasoline(http://www.associatedcontent.com......, http://www.popularmechanics.com......), I can name the top 5 disjunctive of them. They are: ethanol, biodiesel, natural gas, electricity and hydrogen. And I want to stop on the most alternative one - ethanol.

Ethanol is an alcohol ethyl combined with the grain and grass, which can provide more horse power than gasoline. Also using ethanol provides the higher octane rating (over 100) and burns cooler than gasoline and that`s why your car can have higher thermodynamic efficiency.

And especially for your main question: is there any source of energy which can provide the equal power as gasoline? Of course ethanol can. One gallon of this source has an energy content of 80 000 BTU and gasoline has 124 000 BTU. So 1.56 of ethanol can drive your car as one gallon of the gasoline. And we can observe that the difference is not so big.

To conclude, if we take all of the facts as the higher octane rating, more horse power, pure burning and almost a little difference between ethanol and gasoline`s BTU, I think ethanol is the best alternative to gasoline.

ok, if u want to replace gasolyne with ehtanol, let's think about the production. for producing it, according to Wikipedia, there are some requerement steps: microbial (yeast) fermentation of sugars, distillation, dehydration (requirements vary, see Ethanol fuel mixtures, below), and denaturing (optional). Prior to fermentation, some crops require saccharification or hydrolysis of carbohydrates such as cellulose and starch into sugars. Saccharification of cellulose is called cellulolysis (see cellulosic ethanol). Enzymes are used to convert starch into sugar. On what diesel u suppose to run your plants? Gasolyne. Or maybe you would produce ethanol and then make a productiousing it and make a circle of this usage?

As wrote before, ethanol is only one of the most alternative sources and as I know there are also special types of such sources, which are combined with each other. Also there is another one - methanol, which has more octane rating of 100 and produces rather more compression and greater efficiency than gasoline. And the obvious answer is that soon there will the perfect alternative and what we have for today is only a beginning.

For your question I found that there is no need in such complicated ways of producing ethanol as you found in Wikipedia. First of all the corn removes from it`s natural shape, then at the second stage they crushed in a special mills, and after adding water this substance goes into another vessel with the alcohol and after heating and soaring the clear ethanol produces. Theoretically it is not so complicated and nowadays there are people, who produces ethanol at their homes. And by learning this fact we can observe that the alternative sources become more practical and from day to day people understand that it is much better than just using gasoline.

Methanol has more octane number, but what for if there no engines which support it? I agree with you that soon there would be some alternatives, but the question was about fully replacing of gasoline. For making ethanol it's also needed to use natural resources and the proccees would be longer and maybe this case would cause a high price on it. There are some people who produce ethanol at home but it's unaceptable to use it in big producing, because of the quality. I canccept the mixed usage of gasoline and ethanol, it would be the best solving of finishing oil resources.

According to the http://www.popularmechanics.com... National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition with The Environmental Protection Agency listed more than 34 models of flex-fuel vehicles, a special engines, which are able to burn pure gasoline, ethanol and other alternative resources. So one of the problems you said about is already solved.

Of course you`re not the one, who thinks it too difficult to produce such number of ethanol for all the vehicles, but according to the statistics in the 2005 95 ethanol refineries produced 4.3 billion gallons of ethanol, and after 18 month later the number of production increased to 6.3 billion gallons. So the number of the production increases from year to year and there is no doubt that it will be fail.

You said that only combining such alternative as ethanol with gasoline is the best way to produce the best alternative. But ethanol also combines about 5-10 % of gasoline, so you`re mistaken. So as far as I concerned ethanol is the best alternative because it burns much pure than gasoline, it has higher octane rating, it naturally passive and it provides more horsepower.

Thank you for debating!
