No, money is not the root of all evil. Yes, I do get where people get the idea that it is but did you even think about the fact that if money is the root of all evil, then no matter what, money causes it. People are evil without money, therefore money doesn't cause all evil. Yes, money does corrupt people. But I would have to argue, people do many good things with money too. See, the thing is people will do anything to survive. To survive in the world we live in now, you need some kind of money. People will even kill to get more money. The way I see it, it's all psychological. Also how could money be the root of all evil if people were evil before we even had money? Money doesn't make you evil. You do, psychologically.

Money has a different meaning to me than it does to most people, mainly because I'm an economist. Yeah, I know, an economist who thinks money is the root of all evil? What a hypocrite, right? But, when studying economics, finance, accounting, marketing, etc. the first thing you learn is that money comes in many forms. Economics describes itself as "the control and distribution of scarce resources".
A resource itself is money, at least in the economic sense. A piece of paper - or fiat money - is not the only type of money; other materials can be used through bartering.
Now lets take a look at what mankind is. Man is the only species that can look hours, days, weeks, even years into the future and try to make his preferred result come true. By doing so, you give way to plans, plans that make man do anything to make it come true, even commit evil.
Crime itself is deemed evil, as it should be, and most, if not all, acts of crime are attempts at gaining something, a resource. Robberies, assaults, murders have been committed, even rapes. Yes, rapes are attempts at gaining a resource, not exactly the most conventional resource, but a resource nonetheless. I guess we'll call it a "pleasure" resource. They don't teach you this in economics, kids.
Anyway, once man locks his eyes on a target, he'll do whatever he can to gain it, which is what causes his evil actions. People don't commit crime for the sake of committing crime, they do it because they want something. And even those who do it for the sake of committing crime, the insane group, they do it, again, for the "pleasure" resource, the pleasure of knowing what they've done.

Now, if money is the root of all evil then it has to be the cause for all evil, and yet we have people who do evil deeds not for money too. Therefore it can be the root. Yes it may trigger the evil in most people, but this is beyond just one or 2 million people we are talking about. It's ALL EVIL, so It isn't the root of it, because a lot of people are evil before money. Money isn't the cause of evil. The psychological part in your brain is.

One or two million? In the United States in 2011, there were over 9,000,000 property crimes, half a million robberies, over 2,000,000 burglaries, and 7,000,000 thefts. We aren't talking about a small number here. With our population at 310,000,000 that year, it means that around 6% of the population committed a crime for money. And those are only the directly money related crimes, not even getting into the resource perspective of this.
Neurologically speaking, there are certain genetic sequences that lead to violent tendencies in the future, like the oh-so-popular "Warrior Gene". But when the neurons produced by this gene are ignited, they cause a high production of epinephrine (adrenaline) and oxytocin. We all know what adrenaline does to a person, but not all are familiar with oxytocin. It's essential a biochemical that gives the feeling of pleasure, a scarce resource within the body.
You entire argument stems around the idea that a person can do things for no apparent reason, while mine stems from the idea that a person always has a purpose to what their doing, whether it makes sense or not. A person is always trying to gain some sort of resource - which is, again, my idea of what money means in the phrase, "money is the root of all evil." And that statement is supported by a candid history of greed and bloodshed and falling of empires all to gain a resource.

If money is the root of all evil, how can people be evil without and before money? Because money isn't the only cause for evil, especially the root of all evil.

People without money are committing the evil acts they are because they want it; that is the sole explanation for all of today's evil acts.
As for before money, even before bartering, all we have in our historical records are cave drawings. So, in essence, you have no proof that evil ever existed before money or trade. It may have not existed at all.
