Everything around us changes daily, however some of us still latch to the believe that a supreme being actually helps us ,thus also saying that a religion is an important and necessary part of society, but i beg to differ, in 2015 we should understand the value of reasoning an critical thinking beyond the value of blind faith.

Disclaimer: I am personally not a religious individual - simply stating points through an unbiased manner.

Opening Statement:
Asking if religion is needed in society is like asking, "is having a mate ( a good friend or significant other ) is needed in society." It isn't exactly necessary, you can live perfectly fine without it. But in both cases the benefits usually outweigh the disadvantages. Religion is composed of many faces from extremists to orthodox to compassionate to sarcastic. Religion throughout society has provided far more than simply the concept of god.

CON ARGUMENT: Religion hampers your critical thinking ability.

Look at Dr. Francis Sellers Collins who is the head of the National Institute of Health (U.S) and was head of the Human Genome Project. A project which sole purpose was to decipher and catalog the human genome. A person who lacks the ability for objective analysis and evaluation of an issue would not be able to perform such a task. He also happens to be an ardent christian believer who wrote The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief. Or better yet a more famous man who dealt with genomics - Gregor Mendel. If you remember history he was a Priest who latter became an Abbot in St Thomas's Abbey, Brno. He helped pave the way for understanding dominant and recessive traits in offspring. Both of these things required a mind with the ability to analyze and look through thousands of samples to decipher minute changes to come to the conclusions they were able to make.

Religion was never about just god. It is simply an alternate symbolic representation on the views of the world and universe. Symbolism is the heart of religion, not god. Religion is still a valuable part of society many cherish and should not be discarded as an old news paper because of the actions of a few.
