Is science right about evolution or is it still a theory that one species can turn into a different species, for example a bird can evolve into a fish?

Con does not understand what a theory means in science.

Hypothesis=fits the known facts, but has yet to be convincingly demonstrated as the explanation for those facts. For example, theists like to make arguments like the kalem cosmological argument and the fine tuning argument which get you to the point where you can see that a god can fit the data, but since they never demonstrate that a god actually did anything(or that he even exists to do anything), they are left with hypotheses.

Theory=fits the known facts and has been convincingly demonstrated as the explanation for those facts.

Law=Non explanatory description of some facts.

Being a theory does not mean that a thing is untrue or has not been proven. Theory is the highest level that an explanation can rise to given the categories in science. Even if there was a law of evolution saying that evolution happens, there would still be a theory dealing with the explanation of how it happens.

Con't opening position is nonsensical. Even if we were 100% undeniably certain that the current model of evolution was perfectly accurate, it would still be called a theory.
Debate Round No. 1

Con does understand the meaning of scientific theory and is asking if it is proven as fact and cannot be rejected. Facts and theories are two different things. In the scientific method, there is a clear distinction between facts, which can be observed and/or measured, and theories, which are scientists" explanations and interpretations of the facts. An important part of scientific theory includes statements that have observational consequences. A good theory, like Newton"s theory of gravity, has unity, which means it consists of a limited number of problem-solving strategies that can be applied to a wide range of scientific circumstances. Another feature of a good theory is that it formed from a number of hypotheses that can be tested independently. Facts cannot be changed or added to so is evolution a theory or fact? God has nothing to do with this argument.

Newton had a law of gravity, it did not explain how gravity happened, it just described the visible effects.

Evolution by natural selection is a theory. Evolution occurring at all is a fact. Your original question was whether scientists are right about evolution or if it is a theory. If a theory is 100% correct, it is still a theory. A true or "right" theory is one that correctly explains how a process works. It is nonsensical to ask whether X is right or X is a theory.

I am fairly certain that you did not understand the word theory when you made the opening argument, and I am not sure if you currently understand it.

And the,"Famous example an ape into a human." this claim you have made is false, quite bogus actually. The most famous example of evolution is one that comes from a Laboratory and is one of the most common and easiest to be studied.
Posted by Sciguy 11 months ago
That is ludicrous @Melodymainidea! Humans are more closely related to Apes than they are to any other mammal by DNA, you must be thinking of how closely related a chicken is to a Dinosaur. And to reply to @AWSM0055 ,I know it takes thousands if not millions of years for evolution to occur and my example was just that; an example.

It was an example to show the people on DDO how much of an uneducated fool Melodymainidea is and how he is covering his idiocy by the wonderful world of google....which is made up of intellectuals giving him the proper information of which 47% is likely tainted with idiocy which he can resemble his likeness to.

Evolution is the theory that one species will change into a new one. The famous example an ape into a human. It's based on natural selection and mutations. Most mutations are harmful and by natural selection harmful occurrences in a species die out. Mutations are more likely to destroy a species than create a new one. Is a common dog and a wolf in the same species, or different? They are in the same species but are different kinds of canine. Fact is that our DNA sequence is closer to a chicken than it is with an ape.

I really hope @Gooedin isn't allowed to vote because he is a moron, it would be sad to have a debate decided by someone who is less intelligent than my family dogs.....

science cannot be right or wrong. It is a list of observations and the application of those observations.

Your sue of the word science indicates you are incapable of having this debate V5RED. you accepted a notoriously ridiculous conundrum as your stance on something.

@ SciGuy technically ape is not a species, but a broad classification that includes humans, so it would be rather miraculous if anything that wasn't an ape was able to birth a human. :)

Yes, and for an example, an example that is true rather than that awful bird rock example Con did; Blue Eyes and Blonde hair to Red hair green eyes those were genetic mutations.

Evolution is a series of SMALL changes to an organism over a period of time which can take one-hundred years to over one-thousand years.

It is not how you may see it Con where a Male Ape and a Female Ape fornicate and miraculously a Human is birthed.

Yeah it is, but not the way you describe it.

You see, you know how some animals may adapt to their environment to survive, and the animals that don't adapt die out. This is survival of the fittest. This is a fundamental part of evolution.

DNA mutates to create certain characteristics of the animal, most of which make no difference and are either destroyed or kept, and harmful mutations which happen less often, but are also mostly destroyed.

It's the really good mutations that are almost always kept. It's like looking for gold in a sieve from a river or something.

Now you may mostly collect rocks or mud and only a little gold, but if you rinse and repeat this same process for billions of years, then eventually you'll have enough gold to buy Microsoft.

Same sort of concept for organisms. DNA keeps mutating, the body keeps destroying useless or harmful mutations and keeps useful ones.

Now, it may seem strange how this process could produce something like an eye, for instance, but if you do a bit of research, you find out ALOT.

Why am I saying this? Because the biggest part to lack of belief in some thing is ignorance, and because scientists are definitely not ignorant on the subject, most of them believe it to be true.

It is also true because of the amount of fossil and DNA evidence supporting it.

it can be observed.. that makes it 'right' enough for most people. Besides, a bird cannot evolve into a fish. If yes, the evolution theory would be disproved. However, that is quite unlikely.
