Welcome to this debate. Please, both commenters and pro, keep it civil. The objective of the debate is to argue whether the border patrol and fence is effective for the USA. I, Con, will argue against the effectiveness of the border and border patrol, while Pro will argue for it.

Please use proper grammar, and though this is not required, I urge Pro to use quantitative data to support their arguement and always site your resource(s) to prove that they're reliable.

Round 1 is simply the acceptance round. Please don't post your argument in the first round.

Round 2 is where we post our arguments.

Round 3 is where we rebut the arguments from round 2. Do not post rebutals in Round 2. Please don't bring in new information on Round 3.

Good luck, and may the odds be in your favor.

The Mexican border patrol and fencing stretching across the border was made to prevent illegal Mexican immigrants from entering the United States of America. There is currently a yearly budget of 1 billion dollars.

Many political figureheads, especially Donald Trump, have said that the illegal immigrants are "pouring into our country." Oblivious to the facts, the public actually believes that this issue is getting worse to the point where the only solution is to build a 30 foot wall across the borders. However, ever since 2007, Mexican illegal immigration has actually been dropping [1]. In the past three years, illegal immigration has dropped by 12 million people [3]. In fact, a study from the Pew Research Center shows that the net flow of illegal immigrants from Mexico to the United States is actually turning negative, meaning that there is a growing amount of people moving to Mexico [2].

Before coming to the conclusion that border enforcement is the reason why illegal immigration from Mexico is dropping, I would also like to argue how border enforcement only increases illegal immigration!

Before there were closed borders, many residents of Mexico used to shuttle between jobs in the United States such as Texas. However, the increasing amount of border enforcement made it harder for Mexicans to travel to their jobs in the United States and back to their homes in Mexico, so many Mexicans decided to simply live in America. It is estimated that the border enforcement increased the permanent Mexican population in the United States by a factor of four [3].
