The banking concept of education is an oppressive method of teaching. With the banking concept of education "Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating the teacher issues communiques and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat." Freire(1.5) Education is put into the mind of students who are looked upon as knowledgeable and the teachers know everything. They simply provide information while the students instead of learning the material just memorize what they need to know for the time being with no clear understanding of what it is they are taking in. The banking concept provides no background information to what is being taught which makes the learning in all ineffective.

Yes they reiceve, memorize and repeat, “They do, it is true, have the opportunity to become collectors or cataloguers of the things they store.”Freire(1.5) They have the ability to retain the information and put it good use. I disagree with this because if information is being deposited then no background information is being included neither. Projecting an absolute ignorance onto others, a characteristic of the ideology of oppression, negates education and knowledge as processes of inquiry." Freire (1.6) Not everyone is aware of the information they are retaining. The only advantage that comes out of depositing information is with those who are aware of what is being learned and teaching because they do have the proper background information." In modern life we need general knowledge that enables us to deal with new ideas, events, and challenges." Hirshe (5.1) In today's world everyone has to have enough background information in order to even have a full conversation let alone come up with new ideas for different situations that are presented to us in our everyday lives.
Not everyone is aware of the information they are retaining but they are indeed retaining it. In later conversations they may recollect it and make it of use. The knowledgeable who are giving this gift of knowledge are people who studied these subjects in great detail and are simply aiding them in the process of leaning. “Education must begin with the solution of the teacher-student contradiction, by reconciling the poles of the contradiction so that both are simultaneously teachers and students.” Freire(1.8) It starts off as a one way learning process and eventually both student and teacher are learning from each other .

I completely disagree with this statement because they may be effected by those who were not without background information as well. "Banking education maintains and even stimulates the contradiction through the following attitudes and practices, which mirror oppressive society as a whole." Freire (1.7) Society itself realizes that its just a contradiction as a whole because of those sharing the information with little background and those who learned from them and continued to practice it. "The interests of the oppressors lie in changing the consciousness of the oppressed, not the situation which oppresses them; for the more the oppressed can be led to adapt to that situation, the more easily they can be dominated." Freire(2.4) Oppressors often want people to follows their beliefs that way can have an advantage over those who are still naive. Their final interests are with having control over those who are being oppressed.
Those who are still naïve are you and me. Because we are currently continuing to go to school and be educated by educators who feed us information, we are the ones being oppressed, or at least thats what im getting from your arguement. i know that i am learning and my educators are opening my mind to new information that makes me think about more than whats only being presented.
