the glass would be half full because if the glass was half empty then the glass would be half of a glass. then it might be full.
First off, you must clarify. Is there in fact an equal amount of 2 substances "in the glass"? Are you measuring all matter in the glass? Can a glass really "contain" something although it is not sealed? Only once you can answer these questions can your question be answered, also, I would like you to clarify your argument on being half of a glass. The glass is the container, not the substance in it, so regardless of how full or empty it is, it is always a whole glass, as long as it never undergoes any physical or chemical changes. Thank you for starting this, this should be a very fun, and interesting debate. |

the glass is a mug and is half full of water. it has not undergone any chemical changes. the glass is 6 inches tall and the radius is 3 inches long. it is filled 2.5 inches because the glass has a base that is 1 inch thick and the glas's walls are .5 inches thick.
If you could please answer ALL of my questions that would be great, because without all the questions answered, there is no way to tell what the glass is or isn't half full or empty at all, if you are measuring the matter in the glass, it is completely full, unless you remove the air above the liquid, then it is both half full (the liquid in the bottom of the cup) and half empty (the vacuum above the liquid), if you are measuring the liquid in the cup, the cup is in fact half full of liquid, but by the Merriam-Webster definition of empty 1 a: containing nothing, the glass is in fact half empty because you are measuring only the liquid, therefore, the air is irrelevant to your measurement, and is nothing, to prove my point, again from the M-W dictionary, the example following the definition a: containing nothing |

there is only one substance in the glass. it is half of the glss. yes you are measuring all the matter. it can contain something even though it might be not be sealed. the glass is a mug and is half full of water. it has not undergone any chemical changes. the glass is 6 inches tall and the radius is 3 inches long. it is filled 2.5 inches because the glass has a base that is 1 inch thick and the glas's walls are .5 inches thick.
im sure i answered them all now.
The glass is half full, and half empty, the space above the liquid is not occupied, therefore it is emty, the space is half of the glass, so half of the glass is empty : the glass is half empty, yes the glass is half full, but, as I have shown, it is undeniably half empty 100% of the time that it is half full. |

so i would give the debate to repete21 but the people are voting for me so i voted for him.
"the glass would be half full because if the glass was half empty then the glass would be half of a glass."
i am trying to say that the glass would be half full and if it was cut in half wwith thwe same amount of liquid then the glass would be full of the substance.
"then it might be full."
i am just stating that the glass would be full when cut in half.
sorry for any confusion.
thank you all for looking at the debate and i thank Repete21 for taking it up.
(half full = optimism; half empty = pessimism)
