I will accept this debate. However, do not expect any hardcore evidence. :D

Since I accepted the challenge, Con must provide sufficient proof as to why the world will not end in 2012.

"To contrast this idea, take for example the Jehovah's Witnesses. No one group of people in history has ever predicted the end of the world so often and been wrong so often. As of 1984, they are 0 of 9.
And in 1995, they took a step further and announced that Armageddon had been postponed until further notice; thank God for that!
The truth is that the Mayan culture has been distorted and repackaged to resemble something that no longer has any base in science or anthropology.
People have been freaking out and predicting the end of the world since the beginning of recorded history.
And yet, the Earth has been getting along just fine for more than four billion years; if there hasn't been any sign of the end yet, there is no reason to expect it in the near future." says http://www.jehovahs-witness.net....
and if one guy keeps saying its going to end people will start ignoring him.

Wait... so lemme get this straight. You copied a forum post word for word (One that was written in 2004), and then posted the link to the forum as one of your sources...? ok. How amazingly original....

For the benefit of the Con, I will go as far as posting the entire forum post so that his case may be stronger

Violent tsunamis surging through mountaintops and thunderous earthquakes bursting apart concrete streets are just some of the elaborate plot devices behind the movie "2012" that made its way into theaters in 2009.
Producers looked to a widely believed myth that catastrophic destruction and natural disasters await the world in December of that year as they proceeded to give the story the ol' Hollywood spit shine.

Fortunately for us, this is just a movie and it is based on the assumption that when the Mayan calendar ends, so will the entire world.
Not surprisingly, there are a myriad of other theories and ideas surrounding the topic. These include the Earth colliding with a passing planet, or the Earth being sucked into a black hole when it aligns in the middle of the galaxy on that day.
However, none are more famous and awe inspiring as the Mayan end times myth.

Dictionary.com defines myth as "an indirect representation of information that is widely believed as true."

The world ending in 2012 has no more of a logical basis then the Y2K scare when we thought all computers were going to break down or the 6/6/06 incident, when the devil was supposed to return to Earth.
Ideas such as these belong in the same realm as fantasy and only serve a purpose among book sellers, conspiracy theorists, pop culture enthusiasts and last, but not least, movie producers. When Dec. 21, 2012 comes and goes, they will surely think of something else in its stead.
To contrast this idea, take for example the Jehovah's Witnesses. No one group of people in history has ever predicted the end of the world so often and been wrong so often. As of 1984, they are 0 of 9.
And in 1995, they took a step further and announced that Armageddon had been postponed until further notice; thank God for that!

I'll start with addressing the Mayan Calendar point and then introduce another point on why the world will end in 2012.

The Mayans have a great deal of knowledge in regards to how they made their calendars and how they kept track of astrological events. For example, they were only 34 seconds off when they calculated the length of the solar cycle, and that's in a time without scientific calculators. The Mayans had different calendars for different needs, and the calendar that the end of the world refers to is their 'long' calendar, which ends in 2012. (Exact date is disputed)

I now simply ask my opponent how Mayan culture has been distorted if we're just looking at their calendars.

The second point that I will present is the fact that many natural geological disasters are either overdue, or they are peaking in 2012. Solar storms from the sun are predicted to reach their peak in 2012, and the radiation is already hurting our satellites and even power grids.

Secondly, the winter solstice of 2012, will cause the sun to get very near to the elliptical centre of our galaxy, and most scientists agree that there is a black hole around there. Thus, we may be doomed to an interesting death due to an object with infinite mass and no volume destroying us. Personally, I think that's pretty cool. There's a number of scientific events that will happen in 2012, and they are all likely to destroy Earth.

Thus, I conclude that the world will end in 2012. Cause of death? Unknown for now.

to start off with would you believe the myans? they had no technology and had believed the world was flat. when my source says. and a myan expert said this "Contrary to what many believed, year 2012 will not mark the end of the world but will just be a start of a new calendar, according to Mayan timekeeper.

Many consider it a joke although others are scared we might never live to see next year thanks to the Mayan calendar's 'apocalyptic' prediction, the Daily Mail reported." and also if the world will end in 2012 then why are we having the presidential election?
why arent we getting ready for the catatrophy?

Pssh, this isn't even debatable. Any one who's done any research on this knows that we're all doomed to a fiery horrible death.

actually the bible says that jesus will come back like a theif in the night. so if everybody is expecting him to come back in 2012 thaen he won't. therefore, he will come back when people are least expecting him to. that is why nobody know the exact time that jesus will come back from heaven. so no the world won't end in 2012 for those of you who believe this.
