Yes, laws should be put in place to make sure that individuals and the general public are protected and that the normal activities of the cult do not go against the law.

I look forward to an interesting debate; I'll let my opponent begin to provide that we both have an equal number of rounds to argue, and he has the burden of proof so he should present the opening argument(s).

Let's begin.

My opponent has been online and neglected this debate, but we don't need to waste another round so I'll begin presenting arguments here, and will forfeit my last round to keep it even.

Just for starters, I'll provide a few basic arguments to get the round going.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________

1) Tolerance of religion allows for cultural inspiration. During the Islamic Caliphates, the policy was to tolerate all religions under the domain of the Muslims; Christians and Jews lived in harmony [1]. As a result, we had one of the most prosperous dynasties EVER come into existence [2].

2) My opponent has the burden of proof to show that there is a "need" for said laws; I contend that we never "need" anything unless it is life threatening.

3) Religious cults cure cancer. I don't have a warrant, but if my opponent doesn't refute my argument, he concedes and therefore agrees. Maybe this will get my opponent to debate ;)

Thanks for the debate.

Pro did not show up for the debate, a clear loss. He loses conduct for the forfeits.

To make a good debate, the resolution would have to be more carefully worded. What distinguishes a "cult" or a fake religion from a regular religion?

When an opponent forfeits, it is OK to make an argument if want to. There is no need to try to preserve equal numbers of argument.

Making laws will not stop cults from forming and in my opinion, will only encourage it more!

breaking the law is already against the law whether its a person doing it or a cult...

The topic and your actual opening argument aren't even close to in line with each other.
