I disagree. Word voyage really does not seem to help me learn more vocabulary. Although it does save time in class, it is pointless because there are no quizzes or exams on the vocabulary to entice students to remember the words and meanings. Also, word voyage requires you to answer questions on what time period the words came from which is pointless and irrelevant. It also makes you find the the word in its original language (i.e. latin, greek, etc) which is too completely pointless and impractical. When students are given vocabulary books the are able to study the vocabulary as many times as they want to when in word voyage, once the lesson is over it cannot be reviewed. Using vocabulary books and taking quizzes on small sections of the words are more beneficial because students will have a motive to remember them because word voyage is basically graded as if it is completed or not, and not if the student actually knows the words.
Word voyage is replacing the flawed system for vocabulary which existed prior to WV. before word voyage, in mr. Earley's class when we had a vocab quiz, everyone would study during the 5 minutes before the quiz. This isn't a good way to learn vocabulary. Word voyage forces you to learn by making you log in and do lessons about 20 times a quarter, which reinforces memory. Also we need to take a graded quiz after each wv lesson for mrs d's class.
