I thank you for making this debate, in this debate I will establish that Islam is indeed a fast(or fastest??) growing religion.
I accept.

Note: In the title you have meant that 'Islam is the fastest growing religion' right? or "Islam is a fast growing religion"?

Definitions:

Growing: ": to become larger : to increase in size, amount, etc."[1]

Islam: Is one of the worlds major religions and the adherents are called Muslims.

Hi Pro. Thanks for accepting this debate. To clear up the confusion, I meant that Islam is increasing in numbers and will soon become the religion with the most population. I look forward of an enjoyable debate with you.

One very popular online myth and urban legend is that of Islam being the fastest growing religion in the world.

With Islam it seems to be – if you repeat a lie enough times it will be believed.
Another notable examples of this:

Neil Armstrong – first man to walk on the moon.

Some years ago, some Muslims wishing to gain converts created another story for proselytization purposes. One of them includes Neil Armstrong. The myth as propagated by scores of Islamic websites is that while on the moon Neil and others heard the Islamic call to prayer. While visiting Egypt he again heard this same call to prayer and immediately converted to Islam saying that it was the same call to prayer he heard on the moon. (Another myth goes that he also saw the Qur’an floating around on the moon).

[SEE REFERENCES]

To back up this ‘creative truth’ Muslims have also invented fake transcripts and countless other documents including fake references to Neil’s biography. However, the facts of the matter according to Neil Armstrong himself:
1) He did not hear the call to prayer on the moon
2) He did not convert to Islam

He makes reference to this countless times and the US State Department also released a memo to embassies worldwide informing them that Neil was not interested in hosting or being a guest to Islamic events and that he has not nor has intentions of converting to Islam.
Anyway, back to the issue at hand. I found a very good article explaining why Islam is not the fastest growing religion in the world:

Conclusion
From the statistics available we can cleary see that the fastest growing religion in the world in real terms is Christianity. Where Islam gains 23 Million new adherents annually, Christianity gained 30 Million new adherents in that same period. Thus, Christianity is the fastest growing religion in the world.

In terms of the question of gaining the most religions by conversions, again that title goes to Christianity. By converisons from other religions, Christianity tends to be the most effective by a long shot with over 2 Million conversions followed by the 800,000 conversions recorded by Islam in that period.

Another interesting part of the article is the systematic destruction of some fake sources used by Muslims to claim that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.

Summerise:

1. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.FALSE
Islam is neither the fastest growing religion in the world by precentage growth or real person growth.

2. Buddhism is the fastest growing religion in the world.FALSE
Although Buddhism is emerging in the Western world it is not the fastest growing religion in the world.

3. The world is converting to Islam faster than any other religion.FALSE
In terms of conversions Islam performs very poorly. The growth of Islam is attributed to higher birth rates in areas where it is dominant.

4. Christianity is the fastest growing religion in the world.TRUE
By real term growth, Christianity is the fastest growing religion in the world.

Misleading Sources Explained

Currently, many Muslim websites spread the claim that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. These websites usually provide no explanation to these claims or occasioanlly provide loose and unveriifiable media quotes.
1. CNN Wolrd News Article:“Fast-growing Islam winning converts in Western world“

This source provides no statistical evidence to the claim that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. The only allusion to the claim is “The second-largest religion in the world after Christianity, Islam is also the fastest-growing religion.” However, the data proves this claim to be wrong and as a media quote it holds no evidential weight.

2. ABC NEWS Quote
As the quote and citation appears on various sites: “Already more than a billion-people strong, Islam is the world’s fastest-growing religion”. [ABCNEWS, Abcnews.com]

No such quote exists today on the abcnews.com website.

3. 60 Minutes Quote
As the quote appears and is cited: “The Religion of Islam is growing faster than any other religion in the world.” [MIKE WALLACE, 60 MINUTES]
No evidence is provided to support the claim and it is merely a media quote. Again, no reason for this quote to be taken seriously in determining the fastest growing religion.

4. Islamicweb.com estimated that in 2000 there would be 1.9Billion Muslims in the world
False claims like this are one of the reasons why Islam is believed to be the fastest growing religion in the world. The facts of the matter is that the most liberal estimated of the amount of Muslims in 2000 was 1.1-1.2 Billion. Today the world population of Muslims is only at 1.3 Billion.

5. Arabnews article: Islam ‘ fastest growing faith in Australia (Appearing on islamawareness.net)

Although the article is named and used to claim that Islam is the fastest growing religion in Australia, the article itself paints no such picture. The article states that, “Today, Islam is one of the fastest growing faiths in Australia” and makes no claim to it being the fastest growing religion in Australia. Although statistics are provided they do not lead to the conclusion that Islam is the fastest growing religion in Australia as the title claims.

6. ABC Transcript: “Fastest-Growing Religion Often Misunderstood” (Appearing on islamawareness.net)
This article never states that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world nor does it provide evidence alluding to such a claim.

7. People’s Daily Online: OIC official: “Islam shows fastest growing religion on earth”
Other than a representative of Organization of Islamic Conference allegedly making the claim, a quote nor any proof is brought up.

" To clear up the confusion, I meant that Islam is increasing in numbers and will soon become the religion with the most population."

I think you should have put this in the title or in first round, anyways I will establish through my argument that Islam is indeed the fastest growing religion in the world, and will be the religion with the most population, through my first premise my second premise is going to be correct.

"With Islam it seems to be – if you repeat a lie enough times it will be believed."

I think people are smart and will not believe a hoax, if what you have said is true.

Con thinks by proving Niel Armstrong to be not a Muslim - I careless if he was or wasn't- that means Islam is not the fastest growing religion, and also means that Christianity is the fastest growing religion, which is obviously erroneous.

I will go straight into my arguments:

A1:

Guiness world records, quote, Islam is the world’s fastest-growing religion. In 1990, 935 million people were Muslims and this figure had escalated to around 1.2 billion by 2000, meaning that around one in five people follow Islam. Although the religion began in Arabia, by 2002 80% of all believers in Islam lived outside the Arab world. In the period 1990-2000, approximately 12.5 million more people converted to Islam than to Christianity” [1]

According to CNN:

The second-largest religion in the world after Christianity, Islam is also the fastest-growing religion. In the United States, for example, nearly 80 percent of the more than 1,200 mosques have been built in the past 12 years."[2]

Con claims that there is no evidence, but mine will be provided in the citations.

Quotes from Scholars & Authors:

Today Islam is the fastest growing religion(Ed Sepernik) [3]

Islam is the fastest growing religion all over the world(Sherly Isaac) [4]

"There are over a billion Muslims in the world today, including 3 to 5 million in the U.S., making it the second most populous religion on earth after Christianity. According to some estimates, Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world."(Peter Occhigrosso)[5]

Other sources:

"From 1990 to 2010, the global Muslim population increased at an average annual rate of 2.2%. By 2030 Muslims are projected to represent about 26.4% of the global population (out of a total of 7.9 billion people)"[6]

From these reliable sources we can conclude that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.

Most of the arguments that Con uses are from WikiIslam, which if you go into, you'd see it is Anti-Islamic, also anyone can edit that source, but you will say that I am a hypocrite, because I am using a Wikipedia source which there is the same thing, but Wikipedia is known for its accuracy, not many people mess with it, and actually it cites the sources that the text is from, as you can see from the links I have provided.

Con

Hi Pro, sorry for the delay. I was extemely busy for the past few days. Anyways, lets begin:

Introduction:

At first sight, the contest should be a shut-out, leaving Christianity the clear winner. During the twentieth century, Christian numbers expanded mightily around the world, but especially in the Global South. According to the respected World Christian Database, since 1900 the number of African Christians has grown by an incredible 4,930 percent, and the growth in Latin America was 877 percent. The increase for particular denominations was even more startling. During the twentieth century, Africa's Catholic population grew from 1.9 million to 130 million -- an increase of 6,700 percent.

The total number of African believers of all shades soared, from just 10 million in 1900 to almost 500 million today, and (if projections are correct) to an astonishing billion by 2050. Put another way, the number of African Christians in 2050 will be almost twice as large as the total figure for all Christians alive anywhere in the globe back in 1900.

_________________

Introduction[2]:

a) Muslim's claim that their growth rate is 235 percent and 47 percent for Christianity. This statistic came from the Readers Digest Almanac and Yearbook 1983, and represents 235 percent increase over 50 years. Muslims always leave off the 50 year fact to make it appear they are going 235% every year. A simple review of the readers Digest study shows that the growth rate of Islam vs. Christianity is directly linked to the birth rate in Third World countries where Islam dominates and not actual conversions to each religion. Christianity has always been larger than Islam. These statistics from Readers Digest are over 20 years old. Further, we do not consider readers digest to be an authority on such matters. Why will Muslims not quote real authoritative statistics from certified research groups who show Islam is not the fastest growing religion in 3/4’s of the worlds countries.

  1. There are over a billion Muslims in the world today, including 3 to 5 million in the U.S., making it the second most populous religion on earth after Christianity. According to some estimates, Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world. (The Joy of Sects, Peter Occhigrosso, 1996, p394-397)
  2. Islam is the religion which has developed from the preaching and life of Muhammad, a citizen of the city of Mecca in Arabia, who early in the seventh century of the Christian Era appeared as a preacher of monotheism to his own people and founded a religious movement which today counts perhaps as many as 300,000,000 followers, mostly in the heat belt from Indonesia to Morocco.

Relative size and growth of Islam to Christianity:

  1. From Table 1-1, there are 1.9 Billion Christians making up 31% of the world population, whereas there are only 1.2 Billion Muslims making up only 20% of the population. It seems that Allah's little trick by making Judas appear like Jesus, so Jesus could escape crucifixion and Judas was crucified in his place, kind of backfired, since 31% of the world's population never learned Allah played a trick and really believes that Jesus not only died, but was raised from the dead! This should be most troubling for Muslims to think that "Allah's deception" (Qur'an 4:156) actually became the world's largest religion!
  2. From Table 1-1, the relative growth rates of Islam to Christianity are compiled from data that ended the very year before the great terrorist attacks of 911 against the world trade towers in 2001 and the train bomb in Spain in 2004. Statisticians are predicting that Islamic motivated terrorism will last the decade and bring Islam into great disrepute with the world population. This will have a very strong dampening effect on the long term predicted Islamic growth rates for the years 2025 and 2050.
  3. From Table 1-1 you can see that the world growth rate of Muslims is 2.13, and for Christians it is 1.36. A closer look reveals, however that the birth rate of Muslims world wide, is literally double that of Christians. This is due to the fact that Muslims are largest in the developing world where dirt floors, thatched roofs and large families are common. When you the actual conversion rate, where men chose their religion, rather then are born into it, you can see that Christians are converting, on a percentage basis, almost twice as many as Muslims (1.7:1). This means that individual Christians are out converting Muslims almost two to one! What this means, is that as third world Muslim countries become more civilized, their birth rate will drop off to match the rest of the civilized world, but Christians will still continue to out convert them at a rate of 1.7:1.

________________________

Conclusion:

  1. There are more new Christians added to the world population than any other religion on earth every day. This data makes the entire discussion about "rates of growth" irrelevant. The fact is today, that Christianity is the fastest growing religion on this most critical basis.
  2. On none of the 6 continents are Muslims the fastest growing religion.
  3. That Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world is pure myth at best and at worst a deliberate deception of solid statistical facts.

Pro

Before I'd go to my rebuttal I want to say that Con has proved from links and references in his argument that Islam is indeed the fastest growing religion in the world, which I will demonstrate later on.

R1:
"According to the respected World Christian Database"

How is this a valid source? and the source he got all the African estimates are from CBN(Christian broadcasting network), which do not provide any kind of reference to these estimates, not even tables, http://www.cbn.com...
They provide no references no nothing, how can you trust a source that does not even provide a table.

Introduction [2] was copied from islamexposed.webs.com/fastestgrowingreligion.htm

"Why will Muslims not quote real authoritative statistics from certified research groups who show Islam is not the fastest growing religion in 3/4’s of the worlds countries."

well I just did in my previous argument, I have showed seven references with a table, done by Todd M. Johnson and Brian J. Grim.

Con proving my resolution:

Con quoted:
"There are over a billion Muslims in the world today, including 3 to 5 million in the U.S., making it the second most populous religion on earth after Christianity. According to some estimates, Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world. (The Joy of Sects, Peter Occhigrosso, 1996, p394-397)"

And then puts this link in one of his references:
http://www.foreignpolicy.com...

Which clearly shows that Islam is the fastest growing religion, by putting it number 1 after the Baha'i' faith.(Christianity is the sixth)

"It seems that Allah's little trick by making Judas appear like Jesus, so Jesus could escape crucifixion and Judas was crucified in his place, kind of backfired, since 31% of the world's population never learned Allah played a trick and really believes that Jesus not only died, but was raised from the dead! This should be most troubling for Muslims to think that "Allah's deception" (Qur'an 4:156) actually became the world's largest religion!"

How is this relevant?

Then you bring a table. that you provide no source for, not only you confirm my resolution, but you provide no references for your vital arguments.

I extend my arguments.

Why vote Pro:
1)I have brought valid sources from scholars to researchers, and referenced my vital arguments.
2)Con confirms what I have said as I have shown from before.
3)Con fails to rebutt my arguments and just keep spewing more.
4)Con shown bad conduct, as he insulted my God(which is his God also), and ridiculed Islam by making that Joke above.

-Sources should go to me.
-Arguments should go to me.
-Conduct should go to me.
-And he also plagriazed from a source that he did not show.

As I have shown above.

This is a fact, nothing debateable
The debate would be on whether this is 'good' or 'bad'. Or whether this will see a decline in other religions in the future. Or whether this will cause many countries to become muslim etc.
No votes have been placed for this debate.
