There is a reason that America is in trillions of dollars in debt, and that's because America is the "money bag" and is constantly handing out money to countries that shun and decry our way of life. Many countries out there don't even sustain a mediocre army since they know the US will butt in and help them. There are many benefits to isolationism since they can focus on their own country and have time to repair and rediscover patriotic values. Since our military wouldn't be active, no soldiers will lose their lives and the country will save money because they won't have to pay for weapons and feeding the soldiers, ect... We also wouldn't depend on foreign goods, so many more jobs would be created in order for the US to get ahold of these needed goods. And plus, if we don't interfere with other countries, the US would be less hated internationally.

If we were still an agricultural economy, I would agree with you. In fact, I do agree with your sentiment. However, If your talking about the state of the foreign policy, culture, and economy, we can't be isolationist. Sure, it would be great to go back to the days when the we could grow our own food, make our own products, and provide for ourselves, but alas, we have dug ourselves so deep into the complexities that is capitalism that there is no way we can be isolationist.

Most of this can be blamed on globalization. Today countries don't go to war by just killing, but also by buying and selling. If you have a favorable trade relation with a nation, you have gained one friend and lost one enemy. You see, we avoid the bloodshed of war by appeasing each other through trading. We wouldn't go to war with Japan because they provide us with a competitive and innovative technology and entertainment market. Hell, the reason Apple is awesome is because they have to compete with Japan and Windows. War with China is very unlikely because they provide us with cheap manufacturing, so we either pay less for the products we buy or we gain more profit from the products we buy. And the Middle East..... Well that's a little more complicated, but oil and strict religious differences are apart of it.

Well let's just say that we can live without all the conveniences that foreign trade gives us, and we become isolationist. From a military stand point, that is very risky. If you are nation that is rich in natural resources that everyone knows about, you have two options: trade or risk being invaded. If a somebody is desperate for something you have, they will either bargain with you, or they will kill you and take it. If you close down the bargain option, that leaves one choice: fight for your life. A defensive war can be severely draining on a county's economy which kills any isolationist benefit.

Our interventions into other countries are only part of our debt. Welfare in all its many facets is the overwhelming cause of the debt. We spent $15,000,000,000,000.00 on the " great " society itself. What did that produce , generational freeloading. All the " free" healthcare programs.Which much of it has been spent on people who could care less about their health till it hurt.Drug rehab is a joke. They took corporal punishment out of society and now has to spend billions on ridlin. How many [people that should never gone to college went into the social sciences and now we have an army of busybodies in bloated bureaucracies.

No , our debt is because America has become a nation of freeloading , irresponsible, and lazy people.
