I am not trying to be mean, but the spanish word for spanish is espaniol.

There are two words that could be translated as 'Spanish':

Castellano: "Lengua espa"ola, especialmente cuando se quiere introducir una distinci"n respecto a otras lenguas habladas tambi"n como propias en Espa"a." (1)

and:

Espa"ol: "Lengua com"n de Espa"a y de muchas naciones de Am"rica, hablada tambi"n como propia en otras partes del mundo."(2)

Castellano is used more when you when to distinquish it from the other official language of Spain (Catalan, Galician and Basque). Espa"ol is perhaps the more common term but both castellano and espa"ol are correct translations of 'spanish'.
