William Kelly, one of the brothers of the Bogside Artists is the author of "Travels with Li Po" (1). W. Kelly made a major outcry that JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series copy and plagiarized his novels due to there are countless similarities between the two works (2).

Under the copyright laws states that someone can't copy someone's original work (4) and that what Rowling did by telling how many individual plots are the same (5). Since this is a plagiarism argument, then we have to look and vote based on a law perspective and looking at the law perspective, Rowling did violated the copyright laws since it CAN'T a coincidence there are so many similarities to the point it is a copyright violation, no matter how big or small it is.

"Travels with Li Po" came out in 1990 (6) and the first Harry Potter book didn't came out until 1997 (7), so the plot on Harry Potter came after "Travels with Li Po" with similar plot and ideas. Also Rowling tried to stop William Kelly's work (8) from being sold to the open public so I wonder why she did that against a specific book like "Travels with Li Po"? Now a dozen of Rowling's legal lawyers of Schillings such as Neil Blair are unnecessary battling and evoked a violent response against the William Kelly and the editors of Derry, Northern Ireland (9).

"OM ESTABLISHED AS LOST, ABANDONED, A MIRACULOUS SURVIVOR LINKED TO ANOTHER WORLD. HE IS THE CHOSEN ONE"

Douglas Adams once said ""It's one thing to think that you're the center of the universe — it's another thing entirely to have this confirmed by an ancient prophecy." (1). So many authors and creators have used this idea too (2). So why Rowling should be the only one to be labeled as a plagiarist and not the other authors and creators have used these ideas too? Since so many have used this idea also and "Travel with Li Po" is just one book vs. the examples on source 2, it is very unlikely Rowling gotten idea from somewhere else since there are more than tons of other works that could given her idea.

"IT IS ESTABLISHED THAT HE IS BADLY BULLIED AT SCHOOL. CAST OF THE SERIES INTRODUCED."

Rowling said she was bullied at school (3) and the first rule of how ideas are made is ‘real life experiences' (4). I don't want to sound mean but your side sound like it is a very bias and prejudicial views on Rowling. Again so many works have used this idea (5) and being bullied happens in real life (videos 1 and 2). So why Rowling should be a plagiarist against the fact that bullying happens in real life and other works that has used this idea? Any one of them could influence her ‘bullying' idea and again why Rowling is labeled as a plagiarist but any of the other works and people in real life have been bullied haven't been labeled as a plagiarist either?

"CAST OF THE SERIES INTRODUCED"

According to a lot of literature experts (says videos 7-9), this is an element that a novel or any fictional story should have so this ‘similarity' idea by having a story having a whole cast of characters, some of needs to help the hero by helping him on his tasks or develop the character by being against him. Another prejudicial blindness of your side is that again you labeling just Rowling as a plagiarist as so many others have used this idea also (6) so why the authors and creators of those works haven't labeled as plagiarist by Kelly too? How can that a side that blind know what's plagiarism? Again I don't believe this is plagiarism because it is an element that a novel should be using (said by the literature experts from the Star Wars: A Legacy Revealed documentary and how many times the idea has been used, even non-fiction novels used this idea too.

"HP FINDS HIMSELF IN A SURREAL WORLD."

Again this idea has been used so many times (7). Even this idea happened in real life when Christopher Columbus and his crew landed on the "New World". According to Dr. Jonathan Young and filmmaker Joss Weldon says in one of my videos, Joseph Campbell calls this "idea" "The Threshold Crossing" where you are going to a bizarre world and going through it tough and painfully, just like Hercules and other heroes from classic mythology.

"IS INTRODUCED TO LI PO HIS MENTOR AND GUARDIAN"

Again this idea has been used many times (8), going all the way back to the Odyssey so why they aren't being labeled as plagiarists by Kelly? According to literature experts (videos 5-6), a hero must have a mentor to learn about is origins and get wisdom for his tasks in the future. So the rules of the mentor according to the experts from the videos, dismisses this idea also of Kelly's plagiarism nonsense as well of their blind prejudice. Even in real life, mentors date back all the way to the ancient times (9) so that moots Kelly's "Mentor" plagiarism nonsense.

"MUST PROVE HIS COURAGE."

Again this idea has been used so many times in other works (check videos 16-20 and my Star Wars: A Legacy Revealed videos). So again since this idea happens so many times and the literature experts in my videos say this is an element that should be used, it also dismisses this "MUST PROVE HIS COURAGE" plagiarism idea.

"SATANIC VILLAIN"

Again so many works have used this idea (10)(11) and the literature experts from my Star Wars video say that a action genre story like Harry Potter should have a satanic villain.

First off about your "Star Wars: A Legacy Revealed", it is part of the media. According to some sources, JK Rowling is in control and manipulating the media (1)(2). Second your "Star Wars: A Legacy Revealed" sources are proven wrong (3) so they should be considered as unreliable sources. Some of them are not literature experts such as Stephen Colbert is a comedian (4) and some of them are reports who can easily manipulated such as Dan Rather (5) so their words doesn't mean much.

To explain your other sources, the ideas being common doesn't mean she did plagiarized due to not just similar ideas, but many similar plots too (read the PDF in (6))

EXPLANATION: The enchanted forest that OM has to go through is to facilitate his first encounter with his real self and his hidden powers. If he calls it a jungle on
occasion it is only to allude to the fact that in all its wildness and hunger it has much to do with himself and the world as it is.

(P39: 'Are there wild animals in this jungle Li Po?'
'You bet. Millions of them.'
P35: Often he could discern the shape of animals that came near or heard their presence in the bush. Maybe, I wouldn't even recognize them even if I did see them, he thought. Strange fruit hung from trees all around him and once a huge snake dropped down from a branch right in front of him and scared him half to death.
P41: Creatures stirred in their branches and things moved in the tall grass all around.
P37: And horses too. They like to ride the horses especially at night. Angels taught the horse how to run.

P32: If you are not out of the forest by then you will never get out. ' P34: When you sleep at night make sure you are well covered. Apart from that… you will need all the luck you can get.'

P38: ‘Li Po has all power and all wisdom.' (Bart)
P35: ‘I've decided to guide you through the forest,' said he. 'Poor Bart didn't like it. But, what's a Puffin without a conscience, eh?'

P27: Au contraire. It's just that this forest here casts a powerful spell over anybody what gets too close to it. If it takes a likin' to ye, you're done for

P34: The deeper he went into the jungle the darker it became, until the foliage became so thick that scarcely any light got through at all. The noises and screams that echoed all around him grated on his nerves and made him fearful.

P95: "The forest's full of dangerous beasts, everyone knows that." P182: "The forest?" he repeated…. " – there's all sorts of things in there -…"
P185: He walked forward and shook the centaur's hand.
P183: "It's not easy ter catch a Unicorn, they're powerful magical creatures." (Hagrid)

P181: "Well think again boy - it's into the forest you're going and I'm much mistaken if you'll come out in one piece." (Hagrid).

P183: "There's nothin' that lives in the forest that'll hurt yeh if yer with me or Fang," said Hagrid.

P184: And into the clearing came - was it a man, or a horse?" P185: At last, he said, "The forest hides many secrets."

P186: Their ears seemed seemed sharper than usual. Harry's seemed to be picking up every sigh of the wind, every cracking twig. What was going on? Where were the others?
P186: They walked for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper into the forest, until the path became almost impossible to follow because the trees were so thick.")

That's how similar the plot is.

You are constantly asking why Rowling should be labeled as a plagiarist but not the authors that also used this idea too? Well it is possible they are plagiarist too, just like some of your Anime and Manga samples (7), maybe not on "Travelers with Li Po" but somewhere and on someone else.

Many of your sources are ‘wiki' sources and wiki aren't reliable sources because the information is inaccurate (8)(9). Anybody can write any bias information on a wiki site (10) and so many people praise Rowling, a bias information that can act on behalf of Rowling could end up on the wiki site.

That's how what your sources look like, a bias prospective that can act on behalf of Rowling against of any plagiarism accusations (11)(12). As well You Tube isn't an reliable information (13) as well a documentary (14)(15).

The literature experts and/or anyone quoting their knowledge in the "Star Wars: A Legacy Revealed" having their reputations on the line if their knowledge are proven false and unreliable. Especially Newt Gingwich now who is up for the 2012 Republican Nomination against Barack Obama for the President of the United States where someone would have use the ‘false and unreliable' knowledge against him. Joan Breton Connelly who is a professor at NYU (1) with her creditability on the line. They explain the elements of fiction writing and literature works by using examples from classical stories from literature, mythology and history. In this case, what we have to consider what is fact of what is proven that actually happened, even what happened in fictional stories such as books, movies, cartoons and etc. counts.

How do we know that your sources are reliable? William Kelly himself writes many of your sources so your sources are very bias than any sources since it is a blog (2).

Again I read the ‘plot similarities' and there are no similarities but a forest that I still see in other works. You say that my You Tube are unreliable but I still say that they are reliable because they would need financial aid from a very high publishing and production company, such as Sailor Moon with Kodensha Ltd. (3) or Power Rangers with Saban Entertainment (4), so they can't possibly be unreliable. The point I was making of this that like them, Rowling's ideas could come from anywhere with more than a million of possibilities and "Travelers with Li Po" aren't the only ones with the ideas and ‘similarities' as what he disagrees in his blogs and comments. My examples show and tell how easy and how many times similar ideas and elements of fiction writing have been used, ideas and elements that Kelly claims that Rowling stole from him (5)(6) and claim to be originated. From the looks of things, they are not the originators to these ‘similarities' as he claims to be. All these facts dismiss Kelly's plagiarism claims.

Again, HEROES MUST PROVE THEIR COURAGE (7) is a need to have for author to have in his or her novel and an element for a fictional novel (8), some need that William Kelly accused of Rowling to plagiarized when it is a need to have for a novel. ALL HEROES MUST HAVE A MENTOR (9), another element that William Kelly claim Rowling to have plagiarize.

My videos in this round are examples of how many times and how easy to think of ideas and using basic elements of fiction writing, ideas and elements that William Kelly accuses Rowling to have plagiarized.

How can you plagiarize an idea that is a MUST HAVE, A COMMON IDEA and an ELEMENT for any fictional novels? It seems Kelly is oblivious to these facts of what is a must have for a fictional novel and how many times (and in real life) his ‘ideas' have been used (so why Kelly should be look as the originator of these ideas?) and a million of other possibilities of how Rowling could have gotten her ideas with the fact that she used common ides and a must have for a fictional novel. So he have no business calling anyone a plagiarist since he proved he doesn't know anything about how fiction writing works. He believes that all of these examples are false, even the ‘similarities' are obvious been shown in many of my sample You Tube videos, so that prove his obliviousness. So why he knows what plagarism and what is not since he proven he doesn't know the basics as given by Joseph Campbell (10) and all the fictional stories set.

One of your sources involved Power Rangers by Haim Saban. Not to sound mean but Saban can be a fraud and the Power Rangers sources can't be trusted, just like his tax frauds (1) so how can his sources and ideas can be trusted? Since he can fraud around his taxes, no telling what kind of frauds that he aided as well as providing false information on behalf on some of your sources.

Ok, maybe You Tube can be a reliable source so just in case, I have mine that should dismisses all of my opponent's experts from the Star Wars: A Legacy Revealed videos because their words shouldn't be trusted. The video's philosophy involves Joseph Campbell's point a view (2) and shouldn't be taken account since most of his philosophies are wrong (3)(4).

Again the LAW states in many countries including the United States (5), the United Kingdom (6) and Japan (7) that stealing an idea or ideas from another are labeled as plagiarism, it doesn't include if it is an element or a common idea (8)(9). Law is the law, and the international plagiarism laws states that no one is allowed to take ones ideas and then make it your own (10).

Many the majority of the fiction writing industry maybe plagiarized and maybe even William Hardy but that's not the subject of this debate. The main subject of this debate is based if JK Rowling plagiarized or not and the evidence states that she did.

You've made your point that the simple ideas such as "A hero must prove his courage" might be used countless times, but it doesn't mean Rowling didn't plagiarized from "Travelers with Li Po" and the other authors whom might have used this same idea could have been plagiarize too so we must consider that possibility. Again if you read many of the similarities from (11), there are so many similar plots. Kelly knows his story than anyone else and he explains his plots, the same plots that Rowling used. This is not only just idea but plot also involves the plagiarism laws. Maybe the reason William Kelly may not know about any Anime or Manga series that may have the same ideas too.

Now the Anime/Manga industry are having current plagiarist issues with Nick Simmons (Gene Simmons' AKA Kiss son) (12) and having other plagiarism issue too (13) so any Anime/Manga series that was written after the publication of "Travelers with Li Po" could have plagiarized from "Travelers with Li Po" or "Willy the Wizard" because they aided in Rowling's plagiarism trial cases on this specific occasion (14). So with that action from many of the authors and writers from the Anime and Manga industry words and in your case (examples) shouldn't be trusted as it is confirmed they are having plagiarism issues so your examples on Anime and Manga based on the fiction writing ‘elements' and ‘common idea' are proven they are unreliable and moot.

The truth is about choosing… JK Rowling choose to have the same ideas as "Travelers with Li Po', she choose to have the same plots, she choose to copy many things as "Travelers with Li Po" and she choose to violate the policy of plagiarism. Plagiarism is part of a law, not part of morality or what is a fiction story-writing element. So with the evidence and facts that I provide, your examples and your theory of ‘"common ideas being used many times" and "elements of fiction writing" doesn't exclude her that she can copy from "Travelers with Li Po", nothing does. You must ask yourselves, is it a coincidence both "Travelers with Li Po" and "Harry Potter" all has the same ideas and plots? The best answer is no. All of my sources shows and tells you to disregard my opponent's sources, because they don't mean anything to the plagiarism international laws.

I firmly believe my sources proven how fictional writing works and it debunks all of William Kelly's plagiarism and other accusations against JK Rowling (1)(2). You say that it is all about the laws of plagiarism but laws are changed and influence by logic (3). So the ruling of the plagiarism laws can be dismisses by how the logic of fiction writing works or there will be very few fictional writing works in the world instead of millions. Laws and policy are made to be fair but simple as possible.

I believe my experts words should be accounted for because they have enough background, education and research to know how the rules, unavoidable clichs and elements of fiction writing based on their logic on literature and how literature being influenced in the real world (4). Your presenter of your video in your third around argument doesn't explain against directly my experts so your video has no meaning against mine and what does he or William Kelly know about fiction writing or any evidence that can rule against my experts?

So the rules and elements of fiction writing dismiss all the plagiarism claims and other accusations against JK Rowling. The experts and endorsers of my "Star Wars: A Legacy Revealed" videos in the first round debate explain the common ideas of fiction writing, elements, rules, the clichs and the influences that work around fiction writing that would dismisses your and William Kelly's theory about plagiarism against JK Rowling and her works on Harry Potter. The experts from my videos and the examples from other works using the same ideas as "Travelers with Li Po" and "Harry Potter" are evidence that proves my theories right. "Cast of Series Introduced", "FINDS HIMSELF IN A SURREAL WORLD," and many others "stolen ideas that Kelly claim Rowling to have stole". Realizing these elements, clichs and there are a million of other works using these ideas (5) is not rocket science, it is easy to recognize. William Kelly doesn't seem to realize how fiction writing works and doesn't see how many times his ideas been used by other works, proving that his word is prejudice and unreliable. I realize no other unprejudiced words can back up Kelly's claims.

Closing Statement…

Plagiarism laws are based on ‘the expression of an original idea' or ‘taking someone's work word for word' (6). Based on my other evidence and sources, William Kelly's ideas are not original and there is no same expression of an idea. Just ideas that are known as elements and must have for fiction writing as so many other works used these ideas too. They made the elements so, not Kelly. My examples from other works show and tell that how easy to think up ideas that W. Kelly falsely claim and accused Rowling to have stole. How do he knows that Rowling DIDN'T got her ideas elsewhere as there are more than a million possibilities? We can't not believe his word because he stubbornly refuse to believe Rowling could have gotten the same ideas elsewhere and he did not know that ‘his' ideas have been used so many times and by so many other works? Because of that why he knows about plagiarism when he doesn't know about the art of ideas in fiction writing. All my evidence may not show Rowling didn't plagiarized (in other words COPY) from "Travelers with Li Po" but it shows the million of possibilities that she did not. Think of the best theory, evidence and logic here (7), what do you think the most explainable theory, evidence and logic here. Compare mine vs. my opponents, which ones you know are the better and more reliable theory and logic and the ones that should take accounted more?

Thaddeus, We meet again... and how is Mr. Hardy these days? This is not a debate or anything next to near one as no comments worth a damn have been posted. All I can say is that you might consider the fact of a correspondence between me and Rowling, the fact of a contract between me and her agent/boyfriend C. Little, the fact of LI PO written a long time before the emergence of Potter, the fact that I have a reputation that is greatly respected as one of The Bogside Artists. And the fact that I am an honest man who has no vested interest in telling lies to anyone unlike the perpetrators of Potter who have successfully hoodwinked millions by means of their media control and political enablers. End of story. Those of you who want to know the truth would be best advised to visit www.travelswithlipo.com and LISTEN carefully to what is said there which the author of this so-called 'debate' has failed to do. If he is not paid by Rowling for his services he really should be.

I can't vote, but a clear win for Con. Pro picked out the most generic elements of similarity - mostly relating to story structure which is very similar in most fiction. The only conceptual similarities he managed to demonstrate were a magical world (which was still embodied in very different ways) and a "special" protagonist (very rare in books - the protagonists are nearly always ordinary and nothing happens to them which is why most fiction is just descriptions of people sleeping, eating and going to work).
Oh, and get this, the villain in both pieces had elements of similarity with a concept of pure evil; its clearly very rare for bad guys to be bad...

Reasons for voting decision: Pro failed to make a convincing case. Apart from making generic elements of similarity (as Thaddeus noted), Kikematsu spend too much time attempting to discredit Con's sources while failing to refute (to a reasonable degree) Con's notion of the commonalities of the two works story structure--a magical world, special protagonist, a mentor, and so on. Moreover, with this argument un-refuted, Con's other point about Kelly's work not being based on original ideas is valid...........Con wins.
