I love debating and I know every one else here dose to or you wouldn't waste your time but this is not like standing up and speaking so you can't get to long like if you were speaking because speaking doesn't take as long as someone else having to read it I don't want to read a chapter book. Any way the debate is about weather or not you think extremely long debates are bad for the site of course I think they are. So have fun.

And as the title says keep it short. Your turn

M: No you DIDN'T!
O: Oh yes I did!
M: No you DIDN'T!
O: Oh yes I did!
M: Oh look, this isn't an argument!

(pause)

O: Yes it is!
M: No it isn't!

(pause)

M: It's just contradiction!
O: No it isn't!
M: It IS!
O: It is NOT!
M: You just contradicted me!
O: No I didn't!
M: You DID!
O: No no no!
M: You did just then!
O: Nonsense!
M: (exasperated) Oh, this is futile!!
(pause)
O: No it isn't!
M: Yes it is!
(pause)
M: I came here for a good argument!
O: AH, no you didn't, you came here for an argument!
M: An argument isn't just contradiction.
O: Well! it CAN be!
M: No it can't!
M: An argument is a connected series of statement intended to establish a
proposition.
O: No it isn't!
M: Yes it is! 'tisn't just contradiction.
O: Look, if I *argue* with you, I must take up a contrary position!
M: Yes but it isn't just saying "no it isn't".
O: Yes it is!
M: No it isn't!
O: Yes it is!
M: No it isn't!
O: Yes it is!
M: No it ISN'T! Argument is an intellectual process. Contradiction is just
the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says.
O: It is NOT!
M: It is!
O: Not at all!

Monty Python's Argument Clinic Sketch, if you haven't seen it :)

The point I'm making here is that too many debates on this website are very much like the sketch I posted here, with maybe a few extra words added.

Debate is supposed to be two individuals taking up contrary positions. They then provide evidence, reasoning, and logic to support their side, in an attempt to convince an audience (or their opponent) that their side is indeed correct.

A debate in which each side only posts a few sentences can't possibly meet this. How can you provide evidence for an argument if you 'keep it short'.

While there is no need to be extensive and provide a book worth of evidence, I see nothing wrong with providing a response that is equivalent to two to three pages of writing in say a Word document.

We know that people have differing opinions, but I don't like reading debates where someone posts a well-thought out, supported argument, and then the other person responds with two sentences of "Well you're wrong because I say so."

However since you don't define what you mean by 'short' I would ask that you clarify that. I would say that 8000 characters is a good limit, as it comes nowhere near approaching 'a chapter book'. 8000 characters is about the same as reading 3-4 double spaced pages, which should take one about 10-20 minutes at most.

If you're not willing to spend the time to actually read evidence and rebut an opponents argument with well-thought out logic and evidence of your own, why bother debating?

I even get bothered by the 8000 char limit. :/
Some discussion are very broad and since you can only post a limited amount of times in a debate, there is huge demand for much writing space ;)

Unfortunate events have kept me away from the computer causing me to forfeit our last debate which is unfair to you and me so I want to challenge you again and to keep it fair my first round will be exactly the same but you can change yours if you want. If you except post a comment on this page saying so and I will challenge you and if you don't except post a comment saying so.
