Con's position, (mine) is to show that David of the Old Testament is nothing like Jesus of the New Testament. As always my main source of information is the Bible. For this debate Pro is welcome to use any source material available to show David to be a type of Christ. Good luck Pro-

Opening Argument: First of all in another debate I took up for King David in his comedy with Bathsheba so my opponent will not be able to tag Con as anti-David. Secondly in the larger scheme, Con's position is that there are no examples found in the entire Old Testament of any Christ-like figures. These just simply do not exist, (excepting for the imaginary). Adam is as close as it gets and his type example is easily busted.

King David is no friend of ours.

I accept the debate!

It should be noted that Christians believe that there was only one messiah, and that messiah was Jesus. While there are many figures in the New Testament who foreshadow what the messiah would be like, no figure, including David, will be anything like a proto-Christ. The figures of the Old Testament are there to point to Christ and show us that Jesus alone fills in the character gaps that we see with the other figures of the Bible.

I look forward to my opponent's opening argument.

Who the Philistines were, where they came from and where they went is a historical mystery. They just seem to abruptly enter history and suddenly exit. The Bible account of the ancestry of Noah's three sons is not clear as to which 'tribe' the Philistines are to be assigned. There are two or three different renderings in the ancient Hebrew for the word Philistine and one of the original names seems to mean, "of another tribe". Genesis 15:18-21 does not list the Philistines, neither does Deuteronomy 7:1 and 20:17. Abraham and Isaac enter treaties with the Philistines. Basically the Philistines were strangers to Canaan and were drawn to that land for some reason, just like Abraham was drawn to Canaan for some reason.

Until David was King of Israel, the Philistines dominated Jacob's descendants.

1) When David was rejected and deported from Israel he turned to the Philistines.
2) When Jesus was rejected and deported from Israel He turned to the Gentiles.

Con

The Con position in this debate is that King David is not a type of Christ. If the debate title read-

King David: A Messiah-like Figure?

Then there would be no problem because David was a type of Messiah. The problem is that the term Messiah is not equal to the term Christ. The Book of Hebrews says that Christ is superior. Christ is a superior King. Christ is a superior Priest. Christ is a superior Prophet. But the Book of Hebrews does not say that Christ is a superior Messiah. What the Book of Hebrews says is that Christ is superior to Messiah.

Just like Jesus is superior to David. It isn't even close.
