It has been called the great debate, so why not debate it on debate.org. The question is, who is the better basketball player; Lebron James of the Cleveland Cavs, or Kobe Bryant of the L.A Lakers.

The answer boils down to one thing, championships. The number of championships a player wins will cement his place in history. This is the reason that Robert Horry, who has 7 championship rings, will forever be remembered as Big Shot Rob, and not for his lackluster 7 points per game average.

So, using this as the standard for the NBA player, Kobe is better than Lebron. Excluding the 2008-09 season, Kobe has been to 5 finals, and has 3 championship rings. Lebron is 0 for 1 in championship attempts.

Until Lebron wins his own rings, he shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Kobe. Plus has Lebron ever scored 81 in a game?
Xer

Con

Pro believes that Kobe is better than Lebron solely because Kobe has won more NBA championships than Lebron.
-If the criteria for the best player was based on how many championships a player has won, then that means that every single player in NBA history who has ever been on a team that has won a NBA Finals is better than Lebron.

"Until Lebron wins his own rings, he shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Kobe."
-As a matter of fact, you mentioned Lebron and Kobe in the same sentence 3 times in this debate.

"Plus has Lebron ever scored 81 in a game?"
-Kobe scored 81 in a game once. Woop-de-doo. The criteria for a better player is not based on who scored the most points at one single game in a career. It is based on consistency throughout a career.

__________

Pro mentioned how Kobe's team has had better success than Lebron's. But we are debating the best player, not the best team. Lets take a look at the stats, in which Lebron is much better:

(Kobe's stats on left, Lebrons's on right)
***Career Stats Averages***
MPG --- 36.4 ... 40.6 (Lebron wins)
FG% --- 0.455 ... 0.471 (Lebron wins)
3P% --- 0.341 ... 0.328 (Kobe wins)
FT% --- 0.840 ... 0.738 (Kobe wins)
OFF --- 1.2 ... 1.3 (Lebron wins)
DEF --- 4.1 ... 5.7 (Lebron wins)
RPG --- 5.3 ... 7.0 (Lebron wins)
APG --- 4.6 ... 6.7 (Lebron wins)
SPG --- 1.5 ... 1.8 (Lebron wins)
BPG --- 0.5 ... 0.8 (Lebron wins)
TO --- 2.90 ... 3.26 (Kobe wins, less is better here)
PF --- 2.70 ... 2.00 (Lebron wins, less is better here)
PPG --- 25.1 ... 27.5 (Lebron wins)
---Lebron won 10 out of the 13 major statistical categories, including the most important: PPG, RPG, and APG. Lebron can clearly be seen as the better, more consistent player than Kobe.

***2009 Regular Season Stats***
Kobe --- 26.8 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 4.9 APG
Lebron --- 28.4 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 7.2 APG
---Lebron owns again.
---I could post the rest of the stats, but Lebron is winning almost all of the rest of the stats. You can check for yourself at the source at the bottom of the debate.

***2009 Playoff Stats***
Kobe --- 30.2 PPG, 5.40 RPG, 5.1 APG, +28.05 EFF
Lebron --- 35.3 PPG, 9.10 RPG, 7.3 APG, +37.00 EFF
---Lebron has clearly outperfomed in the playoffs as well.
---Rest of stats in source below.

I have clearly demonstrated that Lebron is better than Kobe in almost every single facet of basketball. Sure, Kobe has more championships than Lebron, but so does Brian Scalabrine. Does that make Scalabrine better than Lebron? Nope.

My opponent has demonstrated that the Lakers have historically been better than the Cavs. I have demonstrated that Lebron has historically been better than Kobe. The debate is about Kobe and Lebron, not Lakers and Cavs.

Although stats are vital in determining a player's maximum ability, there are still many intangibles that must be considered. Hustle, leadership, emotion, crowd attraction, and economic magneticism should also be considered when trying to figure who the better player is.

Dang. Nags slaughtered this one. Though, I'd still say Kobe is better. The stats where Lebron won were extremely close. Kobe won in three point and freethrow shooting, therefore, Kobe is a more accurate shooter.
