Woow, I don't know how I feel about that one. Don't get me wrong it isn't horrible, but the best? I just can't agree. Last Christmas just shows the trials and tribulations of life in a nutshell.

Here are the lyrics to Last Christmas, by WHAM!

[Chorus]
Last Christmas
I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year
To save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance
But you still catch my eye
Tell me baby
Do you recognize me?
Well
It's been a year
It doesn't surprise me
I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "merry Christmas"
I wrapped it up and sent it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now
I know you'd fool me again

[Chorus]

A crowded room
Friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you
And your soul of ice
My god I thought you were
Someone to rely on
Me?
I guess I was a shoulder to cry on

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore me apart
Now I've found a real love you'll never fool me again

[Chorus: x2]

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover buy you tore him apart
Maybe next year I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special.

Please point out what specifically about this song represents Christmas? It comes across, both in tone and lyrically as a broken heart story, rather than a Christmas song.

Here are the lyrics to the The Seasons Upon Us, by The Dropkick Murphys:

[Chorus:]
The season's upon us, it's that time of year
Brandy and eggnog, there's plenty of cheer
There's lights on the trees and there's wreaths to be hung
There's mischief and mayhem and songs to be sung

There's bells and there's holly, the kids are gung-ho
True loves finds a kiss beneath fresh mistletoe
Some families are messed up while others are fine
If you think yours is crazy, well you should see mine

My sisters are wackjobs, I wish I had none
Their husbands are losers and so are their sons
My nephew's a horrible wise little twit
He once gave me a nice gift wrapped box full of sh!t

He likes to pelt carolers with icy snowballs
I'd like to take him out back and deck more than the halls
With family like this I would have to confess
I'd be better off lonely, distraught and depressed

[Chorus:]
The season's upon us, it's that time of year
Brandy and eggnog, there's plenty of cheer
There's lights on the trees and there's wreaths to be hung
There's mischief and mayhem and songs to be sung
They call this Christmas where I'm from

My mom likes to cook push our buttons and prod
My brother just brought home another big broad
The eyes rollin' whispers come love from the kitchen
I'd come home more often if they'd only quit b!tchin'

Dad on the other hand's a selfish old sod
Drinks whiskey alone with my miserable dog
Who won't run off fetch sure he couldn't care less
He defiled my teddy bear and left me the mess

[Chorus:]
The season's upon us, it's that time of year
Brandy and eggnog, there's plenty of cheer
There's lights on the trees and there's wreaths to be hung
There's mischief and mayhem and songs to be sung
They call this Christmas where I'm from

The table's set, we raise a toast
The father, son, and the Holy Ghost
I'm so glad this day only comes once a year
You can keep your opinions, your presents, your happy new year
They call this Christmas where I'm from
They call this Christmas where I'm from

I find it MUCH more easy to relate to this, a story about crazy relatives, snotty children and drunken mayham. It also mentions a lot of themes relevant to our modern day Christmas, specifically Christmas dinner, the tree, carollers and so on.

Christmas comes but once a year. It is a time of caring, loving and most importantly GIVING...perhaps giving of ones heart. Yes, Christmas is one day, but it's quite the epitome and collaboration of the the heartbreaks and love that endures the whole year. You tell me how Christmas isn't about the heart?! Christ Jesus our Lord is all but the prime example of love my dear...

Unfortunately, your response doesn't help prove your resolution.

I think you've glossed over what I would consider the most important aspect of Christmas; spending time with your family.

While a song about a relationship ending at Christmas may relate to some small minority, it's doesn't ring true to me at all, where as spending time with your crazy family does. While the song I have chosen may be tongue-in-cheek about the pitfalls of spending time with family, it certainly focuses on the events of Christmas day.

Nothing about the song you've chosen relates directly to Christmas, per se. It could be called "My Last Birthday" (the sylabols fit) and the only actual reference to Christmas (the line: "With a note saying 'merry Christmas'") could be changed to "Happy Birthday". The song wouldn't lose anything.

My song on the other hand has dozens of Christmas references.

Also, you threw a bit of Jesus in there for some reason. (I wonder if you realise that the way you worded it, you were saying Jesus wasn't the prime example of love). So, here is the Wikipedia page on Christmas: http://en.wikipedia.org...;

Read up my dear.

Well, dear, Wikipedia doesn't quite prove your point either. It is not a credible website, so I suggest you read up.
And Christmas is not just about family, although it is involved. It's more complex than just a crazy family doing weird things around the holiday. That song doesn't relate to me at all.
But we have all had a love one die, or move on. Whether it is a significant other, family or friend. But although someone may be out of our life, we face another day, and must proceed on. Christmas is a large reminder that a love one is no longer with us on a joyous holiday where FAMILY gathers.

Oh the old 'Wikipedia isn't a credible website' line.
It actually is, if you're just trying to learn about something (although you probably shouldn't just take everything on it as fact). I mean it cites sources at the bottom and everything!

But I digress...

CONCLUSION
I think I have shown, without sufficient rebuttal, that Last Christmas by Wham isn't even really a Christmas song. My point about it's lack of Christmas themes went uncontested. My point about the words "Christmas" being replaced with "Birthday" in that song, without it losing any value when uncontested. My opponent seemed happy to just jabber on about lost love or something.
I could have decimated this resolution by simply citing classic Christmas carols and songs, since this debate didn't specify that I must chose a specific song that was better, but instead I chose rather to just pick the first Christmas song that came to mind and go with that. Also, Dropkick Murphys are my favourite band, so yeah.

Last Christmas by Wham is not the BEST Christmas song of all time. It's not even, really, a Christmas song. It's just a soppy love story about someone getting heartbroken and finding someone better, with a vague Christmas reference that isn't relevant to the story it's telling at all.

The Seasons Upon Us may be crude, but at it's heart is IS a Christmas song and a good one at that.
