The legal drinking age in the United States is 21 years old. As soon as you come of age you may go to the bar and present your I.D. and have a drink of anything you would like. However, what is the reason for this drinking age?

"The concept that a person becomes a full adult at age 21 dates back centuries in English common law; 21 was the age at which a person could, among other things, vote and become a knight. Since a person was an official adult at age 21, it seemed to make sense that they could drink then, too" (Mental Floss Website).

Obviously, if that was the reason for the age to be 21, then the age now should be 18. Franklin Roosevelt did lower the drinking age to 18 during his terms of presidency. However, it soon got put back to 21. It was put back to 21 because of all the drunk driving. It was shown that at age 18, kids still aren't ready to be drinking. they aren't responsible enough.

Now, 3 years after 18 you are considered an adult and are allowed to drink. Not only are you just getting out of the teenage stage, though, you are also not at the mind set to drink. It has been proven that the brain doesn't stop developing until mid-20s or even early 30s (BBC News). The age should be higher so that you have more time to be a kid, make money, and let your mind finish developing, that way when you do drink, you won't be hurting it quite so bad, and you will also be more mature to handle the alcohol.

Thank you for the rapid response.

As my opponent is positing the notion, that the legal drinking age needs to be older, 23 as stated, it is her/his burden to affirm the resolution. No where stated in the previous round does my opponent demonstrates that the age of 23 should be the necessary legal age to drink.

The human brain continues to develop after the age of 23, which seems to be an arbitrary age to deem necessary for the legal age of drinking. If we consider my opponents arguments, that 23 should be the legal age to drink, why not raise the age for military draft, the age to obtain a drivers license, or even the age to vote. These are all activities could be considered for review as well. To assert that the age needs to be raised requires demonstrable evidence that it would be considered necessary to do so. My opponent has merely speculated the notion.

If an individual is considered an adult at the age of 18, given that he/she is responsible to consent to his/her own decisions, drinking alcohol should also be available at this age as well.
