I would like to debate someone that is in favor of continuing the 45 year old war on drugs because it is a great legislative program. My position is based on both a libertarian view of freedom and looking for a new solution to a real crisis.

Hello. Thank you for making this argument.

first of all.
I am supposing you are talking about harmful drugs, cocaine, weed, heroine etc (not the medical, safe drugs)

Legalizing drugs is a dreadful thing to let out legally.
When sniffing cocaine it will change the way you think, You loose contact with reality. This could mean many things, such as
you causing damage to other humans/animals with out realizing, run out in front of a moving car or even walk into a school with a a fully loaded m16.
Cocaine will effect your heart, brain and your emotions.
You will get addicted very easily and could cause sudden death at any time.

Now heroine can also make you die instantly. Herione can make the person stop breathing at any time.

A sudden disgusting death is certainly not worth getting 'high'
I will leave it at that for the moment.

I will not dispute the fact that drugs are harmful. The point that disproves this logic is simple though. Legal drugs such as alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drugs being abused kill far more people. Alcohol related deaths toped 75000 last year alone. Tobacco deaths top 400,000 annually, and slightly less than 42,000 from overdose so keeping drugs illegal due to the harms is a flawed argument. (all numbers based on US)
All these facts alone; people still drink, they still smoke, and they still do hard drugs. Just say No was an abysmal failure just as every other weak prevention strategy has been over the last 45 years. If half the money spent on the War on Drugs got spent on a real prevention program targeting kids and really teach them what happens with bad choices the next generation might be saved.
The war on drugs is about money, always has been and always will be. Between local, state and federal budgets the War on drugs costs half a billion dollars each year. This money gets spent on law enforcement and prisons primarily. Instead of drugs being an economic drag that does not stop use (even with prohibition) maybe a new strategy is due.
Yes, people will die from drugs, they already do. People who do drugs know there is inherent danger and choose to participate anyway. Take the money flushed into prisons and provide quality treatment for someone that wants help. Drugs are bad, but that does not make an addict not use them
