First, I must say that I do not under any circumstances promote abortion. I think that it is twisted and sick to murder an unborn child who has no say in whether or not they get the chance to enjoy life. However, this debate concerns those times when the choice to abort is not carried out fully or correctly, causing the pregnancy not to be terminated. If the baby is born, let the child live. It would not be impossible to find alternate solutions to ending this life that has already begun if the choice is not to keep the child.

I look forward to hearing from someone who has a different take on this particular subject.

Until a baby is born naturally, it is not truly alive. Live birth abortion is just another type of abortion and doesn't differ from the main point of abortion: it is the mother's choice to have the baby or abort it. Since the baby is not alive and is a part of the mother, she has the right to make the choices of life.

Making live birth abortion illegal will go against the important case of Roe V. Wade and would go against a woman's right to choose.

The baby is not born, is not a citizen and therefore, has no rights. It is the mother's decision, no matter how far along into the pregnancy it is.

My opponent states, "Until a baby is born naturally, it is not truly alive". This, however, is not true. Biology states, very clearly in fact, that at the very moment when a baby is conceived, something unique comes into existence. Because this unique organism possesses human DNA and was conceived by humans, it can only legitimately be considered human life. A baby's heart begins to beat 18 days after conception, and 21 days after conception the heart is pumping blood. A baby's brain-waves can be found at 6 weeks, and at 9 weeks all the structures for pain sensory are fully functioning. This means that a baby can feel the pain it is forced through when it is aborted. How can you not say that this is a live human?

A child could be born at 20 weeks old, extremely premature, and still have a chance at survival. How, given this information, can a fetus not be considered a human being? Infants, who have undergone partial abortions or abortions not fully carried out, still have a chance at survival if they are indeed born. I now ask you how any one person could take away that chance from someone so innocent and incapable of deciding for themselves -- this to me is disgusting.

My opponent also states, "Since the baby...is a part of the mother, she has the right to make the choices of life." Just because the baby is a part of the mother does not mean that she should decide to kill the baby so that she can get on with her own life. There are certainly other alternatives to this, which very easily can be construed as murder.

Going into the discussion of Women's Rights: as a female, I do understand what women had to go through to obtain and hold these rights that we have today; however, many women act impulsively when deciding on abortion, and this is not a subject that should be taken lightly. Thrown into a panic from an unexpected pregnancy, lots of women try to take the easy way out. If a woman did not want to get pregnant, she should have taken the right precautions to secure that she would not end up pregnant. Using abortion as "birth control" is wrong. Once a baby is conceived, it is a human, and should not be killed just because their parents made a mistake. Don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying that we should "punish" women for bad decisions using their child, but at least give the child a chance by putting it up for adoption, or finding a couple who would be willing to adopt the baby.

Live birth abortion, in my opinion, is far worse than even an abortion at an early stage. A common method of live birth abortion is called a Prostaglandin, in which "artificial prostaglandins are injected into the amniotic sac which induces violent labor and leads to the birth of a child usually too young to survive." -(http://prolifeaction.org...) If the child does survive, measures are taken to kill the child. In an IL hospital in 1999, it was discovered that the hospital was shelving babies in a dirty utility room to wait for death, because the abortion did not work and the baby was born alive. This is sick -- shoving an innocent little baby into a dirty, small room so the baby can die alone without even trying to save it is inhumane and indecent.

Yes, but the baby is still not alive, it is still part of the mother's body and therefore, has no rights.

Yes, then can be born, but then they are alive and no longer part of the mother. An abortion at this time is still okay as the baby is still apart of the mother.

As I've said, the baby is part of the woman's body and so she decides whether or not to have it.

Women have the right to not have their children and if they accidently get pregnant, they should not be stuck with the baby.

Some things may go wrong with an abortion, as any operation can. These babies were not supposed to live as they were being aborted, so they have no rights as a human and are not subject to being taken care of.

Every human being has rights, even if they cannot voice their wants or needs themselves. A baby in the womb IS a human being at conception, no matter how you spin it. Just because the baby is "a part" of the mother does not mean the mother should kill her baby. Technically, the baby is a part of the mother, but the baby itself is a unique human being all it's own -- why should the mother be able to kill her baby since it has no way to defend his or herself?

If a woman were to "accidentally" get pregnant, she would be a tad unintelligent, first of all, for not using protection and being on actual birth control -- using abortion as birth control is sick. (In the case of rape, this is a tiny bit different, but less than 1% of abortions are due to rape -- also, just because the babies dad is a rapist does not mean the baby shouldn't have a chance at life.) Once you are already pregnant, there is no "birth control" that you can take because the baby is already alive. Killing it wont solve all your problems -- over all, it will create them. Women everywhere who have gone through with abortions that made sense to them when they were having it done feel shame and sadness and depression afterwards. The thought of that innocent baby dying because they were selfish haunts a ton of women for the rest of their lives.

My opponent states that "These babies were not supposed to live as they were being aborted, so they have no rights as a human and are not subject to being taken care of". When someone is a murderer, do we take away their rights and punish them to death without having a trial first? No. These citizens, even guilty, retain their civil rights. A baby in the womb IS a human, as I have already stated multiple times. Let me give another example -- if a cancer patient is told he is supposed to die, should we just kill him and get it over with? After all, this person is not supposed to live so are they no longer "subject to being taken care of"? Should we just take the life support and the chemotherapy away from them and let them die, because they aren't supposed to live?

Its a tad more complicated than that. If there were any way to prove whether a fetus was a living thing or not, the whole abortion debate would be solved for good. If you understood how words work though, you'd realize this is not possible.

actually con, the baby is alive.

Dictionary.com states that "alive" is defined as: having life; living; existing; not dead or lifeless

and if you look at the definition of "life" it reads "Anything that can grow"
Which, as i am sure you know, the baby is indeed growing, at a very rapid rate i might add.

"but yet woman are allowed to kill their babies legally"

----> No, they are allowed to kill their masses of tissue. Fetus =/= baby. A wonderful propaganda tool for you and them pro-lifers to sneak in ;D

And yet con states on his profile that he is against abortion..hmm
I hear a lot of arguments that the legalization of abortions is taking away the will of the Woman. But look at all of the other examples that take away our will in very similar circumstances. I am not allowed to beat my animals, beat other "humans" In my area we are also not allowed to have sex with our animals (used strictly as an example) but yet woman are allowed to kill their babies legally..hmm

Essentially, yes. If the baby isn't aborted correctly and actually survives the abortion, they put it down. Some see it as a mercy killing, others see it as murder (I guess it could be both). An interesting debate, because I think it could easily apply to things like doctor-assisted suicide and other things of that nature.
