I have noticed that a surprising number of people still think global climate change is a hoax. I hope to destroy some of that myth. Pope Francis recognizes climate change and calls for swift action. [0]

Impact: I think the Pope knows what he is doing and thus man-made global climate change is real and a threat.

The scientific angle, inconvenient truth [1]. Impact, scientific evidence clearly backs up this claim in the documentary an inconvenient truth. [1]

Tempartures are dropping:

How can the world be heating up if it is warming up? And why is Antartic Sea Ice growing?

First newmax.com is ultra conservative. "CEO of the uber-rightist Newsmax" [2]

Second, temperatures are rising. Third, Antarctica ice increasing is consistent with global warming and in fact provides additional evidence that temperatures are rising. My opponent is in stage 1b of climate change denial. [3]

You can read further about Antarctica ice here. [4] As for temperatures rising this seems like "Objection: Global temperatures have been trending down since 1998. Global warming is over." [5]

As you can see newsmax and John Casey cherry picked the evidence by starting at the hottest year and an anomaly. [6] This is a classic cherry picking fallacy.

Picture should be here if not use link to see the cherry picked data

Global Temparture and solar activity:

And here is manmade co2 emmissions compared to natural co2 emmissions:

CO2 emmissions are a byproduct of capitalism, which creates wealth and a higher quality of living for people around the globe, co2 emmissions also create more plantlife. So by arguing for reduced co2 emmissions my opponent is arguing for global poverty and deforestation.

"Many climate scientists agree that sunspots and solar wind could be playing a role in climate change, but the vast majority view it as very minimal and attribute Earth’s warming primarily to emissions from industrial activity—and they have thousands of peer-reviewed studies available to back up that claim." harrytruman

Sunspots play a minimal role.

As for CO2 levels only being a small part of the greenhouse gases this is true. Neverthless, naturally occuring CO2 is balanced out. Human industry made CO2 is not. Thanks for the debate.

First of all, what scientists say dis irrelevant, scientists used to think that the earth is flat, and even today they are telling us that GMO's are safe, even though foreign scientists have proven time and time againthat they are in fact not safe. Yet, this is the general concensus.

Second of all, in Round 2 you tried to disregard my citation that global tempartures are in fact dropping because "newsmax is a conservative news site," as if someone being a conservative automatically discredits them. So this is prettty much just an ad-hominim attack.

I could say that because all your citations are highly liberal that they are false. Either way, you claim that CO2 levels are increasing, which is true, and that tempartures are increasing, which is partialy true. But you are yet to prove that these temparture increases are caused by CO2 emmissions.

I could say that since 1700 the number of Pirates on the high seas have decreased while global warming has increased, therefor pirates reduce the global temparture.

Also do the math, if 3.25% of CO2 emmissions are man made, and 0.04% of ouratmosphere is CO2, {1} then the global temparture can only increase by 0.0013% as a result of CO2 emmissions. Mathmatically speaking, it makes no sense that such a small influence on the atmosphere can cause gobal warming. And look at this graph:

It looks like the tempartures are increasing t a rapid rate, but if you accountfor the highest temparture anomaly we have is less than 1 degree celcius, and that it has developed over 76 years, then the idea of global warming being a threat to humanity is shewn to be completely absurd.

Perhaps the explanation of the warming is not just global. The entire solar system seems to be warming at the same time (as debated here:
http://www.debate.org...
Check the comment section for more on the topic)

Scientists think that we are flying through a patch in space with abnormally high energy levels that is affecting the atmosphere of every planet in the solar system.

Another explanation is that the suns magnetic field, which has increased in strength by 230% in the last 100 years, is attracting star dust which could also be affecting the atmospheres of all the planets.

Yes, cows produce methane CH4 which is a greenhouse gas. We need to reduce our beef consumption.

Has anyone even looked for other reasons? This is science so search every aspect. Could there be a connection between the rise in CO2 and cow farts? It sounds funny but cows and other animals, especially those damned termites, put out a ton of the stuff. Maybe, just maybe, the world reached its saturation of trees. That leads to a saturation of insects and freaking termites. Over the last 100 years there could have been more termites than history has ever had. It is possible.

Science needs to be proven, so prove it. Science is about coming up with ideas and proving them. We know with 100% certainty that many things are what they are because of science. So scientifically prove this theory. Until then, nope, not going to think it is 100% true.

Again, we produce less than 3% of carbon dioxide. Maybe dinosaur farts killed the dinosaurs and maybe cow/termite farts are what is causing the current trends.

We are never going to be 100% sure of anything. But, the evidence shows that beyond a reasonable doubt the Co2 increase is due to burning of fossil fuels.

"Rare" means it has happened before, long before people were the cause. This may be a "rare" time in global climate history, but how do you prove it is because of mankind? We provide less than 3% of greenhouse gasses. That means nature is 97% of them. Perhaps there is just a hugely abnormal number of termites?

Can anyone actually PROVE humans are responsible for this climate change, something that has happened before, and not termites?

You are in stage 3b of climate change denial.

"Such rapid warming on a global scale is quite rare in the geological record, and while it may not be entirely unprecedented, there is strong evidence that whenever such a change has happened, whatever the cause, it was a catastrophic event for the biosphere."

The worldwide climate has been changing ever since the planet has had a climate. It will never stop until the planet no longer has a climate.
