Marijuana should be legalized. It has many uses and there are no recorded deaths directly related to marijuana. 440,000 die annually from cigarettes and 75,000 people die from alcohol each year in the united states alone. Yet both of these drugs are legal.

My opponent has not provided any definition of legalization, so I will be debating under the assumption that legalization is defined as the lifting of legal prohibition with no particular or unique system of taxation. For the sake of expediency, I will assume that an age requirement of 21 will be necessary for purchase of the drug.

Pro argues that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco. I do not dispute this. However, it does not follow that because of it's lesser health effects that it should be made legal. In fact, an objective view of the evidence would lead us to realize that most psychoactive substances should prohibited from sale or consumption without proscription.

It's clear that virtually all recreational drugs cause a host of societal problems. Marijuana is no exception, as it's use has been associated with an increase in accident risk, respiratory issues, emotional and psychological issues, and learning impairment. People who use marijuana are more likely to have issues holding steady jobs, and less likely to earn an education. Marijuana use is an overall a net drain on society.

Prohibition has shown to decrease substance use by merits out of shear respect for the law. During the prohibition of alcohol, alcohol use rapidly decreased despite the fact that the law relied almost entirely on state co-operation. In many cases, alcohol consumption was openly tolerated by state or city governments despite its illegality, yet from a public health policy it was a success. There have been numerous scenarios and studies which give us ample evidence that liberalizing laws do in fact lead to an increase in use.

Sam, after we finish our debate, I'll take you on this topic if you're up to it :) Your opponent didn't give you a challenge at all, and this is something I feel pretty passionate about.

Last word in paragraph two should be prescription, not proscription.
