Thanks for accepting. My Definitions:
Marriage: the legal or religious ceremony that formalizes the decision of a man and a woman to live as a married couple
Outdated: no longer useful or fashionable
Institution: a well-established and structured pattern of behavior or of relationships that is accepted as a fundamental part of a culture

Arguments:
Marriage is a statement to others, not a statement to your partner. Marriage is merely showing others that you are devoted to the relationship, not a statement to your partner. Your partner should not need this statement in order to trust you, or else this relationship should not continue.
The need to marry shows instability in a relationship, and instability in a relationship shows that the people in the relationship aren't ready for marriage. This continues in a circle, and the only way to resolve this problem is to take marriage away.

Marriage was once a way to raise a family"s social standing. Families would marry off their daughters to rich men and their social status would go up. Now, this is not necessary. Women are now perfectly capable of rising through the social classes. They no longer depend on the men to be the one who earns the salary and supports the family. Currently, women make up 47 percent of the American workforce. Compared to the 1800s, where almost none of the women were paid wages, this increase shows that women no longer have a dependence on men to pay for the family.

Marriage was a way for a woman to have access to a person that has more rights than her. Men used to have more rights than women, so women would marry men to access to their rights such as the right to own land. However, women"s rights are now almost equalized to men"s and they are no longer dependent on this system. For example, women could not express their political views until the early 1900s. The only way they could have any impact in the political world was if they married a man with political power, and/or rights. However, as previously mentioned, women can now vote and are actively participating and influencing people in politics.

People are unhappy with their marriages. People are murdered over marriage issues every day, and commit suicide because of unhappy marriages. Anna Filali, a teenager forced to marry her rapist, committed suicide because of her situation. She was actively unhappy as a result of her marriage, and when no one listened, she decided that her marriage was so offensive and intolerable the only way to escape this abomination was death. Moreover, more than 1 million American marriages end in divorce. If numerous marriages end in failure, and separation, there is something wrong with the system. If people do not feel satisfied with their marriages, then the fault must lie in the concept of marriage.

Marriage limits the opportunities of the people involved. They feel as if their choices are being limited because they might either be reflected badly on their partner or their partner may not agree with the decision. Furthermore, marriage laws might prohibit them from trying other experiences. Marriage goes against the concept of "a world of opportunities." In America, which is a land of opportunity, this is not true. However, many cultures and religions forbid divorce, making people unhappy and, as I have said before, suicidal.

This is why marriage is an outdated institution.
