The problem for tweens, teens, and even adults these days are highly influenced by media; from favourite celebrities to weight loss ads.
One of the leading controversies are their self-image, which can be negotiated by simply looking at the cover of a magazine in the supermarket. Stick-thin models will cause them to starve themselves, consider surgery, or worse. Should this not be banned?
Ragnar

Con

It should not be banned, as such massive descrimination would border on human rights violations. Besides what exact standard would be used to determine who is the wrong weight or body shape, to legally be allowed to appear on magazine covers?
Debate Round No. 1

Pro

Thus starving and/or disorders are not only bad for peers, but for the models themselves. This may result in sickness or death, which is not at all necessary.
There are many campaigns like Dove for instance, that value natural body shapes and who get the same amount of publicity.
Ragnar

Con

As you have completely ignored my argument and cross examination questions, I extend them into this round.

All that has been suggested is some type of witch trial against one natural set of body shapes. Government imposed action against people for looking wrong in some roles, much like how not many years ago President Obama would not have stood a chance at office because he looked wrong... This is related because different races carry their weight differently, making the standard on it more likely to affect people of one race than another.

Further the only benefit suggested, is hiding a problem; intentionally making people ashamed of their body if they are not of an undefined standard.

In short, just because pro dislikes one natural body shape, is no reason to ban the appearance of it from anything. Consider Gwyneth Paltrow for example.
Skinny can be beautiful too.
Skinny but still beautiful. Yet pro's suggestion could easily target women like her, fining them, throwing them in prison, or whatever the suggested solution to offenders who get their picture taken is. Any of which would be simple insanity.

Gwyneth paltrow is not anorexic
Ragnar

Con

No actual standard for enforcement has been suggested, even when pro was reminded to do such.

Nor was there any disagreement with my point of "Yet pro's suggestion could easily target women like [Gwyneth Paltrow], fining them, throwing them in prison..." which is simply barbaric. Pro also offered zero disagreement to my point about how this same type of standard would limit which skin colors are allowed to be president; which is also barbaric.

As we are a civilized society instead of barbarians, the resolution is firmly denied.

@SJS, if you ever want to redo this one let me know. Either a rematch, or with me coaching your setup to defeat someone else.

I would be upset if this debate doesn't get a Re-do

Reasons for voting decision: Pro did not clarify the debate and made no arguments or rebuttals. As such arguments must go to Con. I think Pro also made more grammatical/spelling errors as such S&G points to Con. I think Pro should have made a greater attempt at defining the proposition, as this debate could have been great as it is a very interesting topic.

Reasons for voting decision: Pro never explains how we know whether a model is anorexic. Do we ban any woman who looks "too skinny" even if she eats enough calories each day? Or do we ban people only if we can prove that they do not enough sufficient calories per day. Some women have naturally tiny frames. I knew a girl in high school who *could not* gain weight no matter what. Also, not every picture that is published is actually what the model looks like (tons of photoshop), so I don't even see how voting Pro solves for the self-image problems in our society.

Reasons for voting decision: I won't award points since: A. The arguments were changing and each side seem to put in an effort to dodge actual debate, therefore I don't see how points can be awarded. B. No sources backed either argument C. Spelling was Equal, which is typical D. Conduct was bad from both sided as they dodged actual debate

Reasons for voting decision: Both kind of made arguments and dipped around each others contentions. This was virtually untouched. Pro slightly touched on why it should be ban and con responded with a reason why it should not be banned in response to pros reason. Pro also dropped the last round entirely and con managed to outline why his contention was stronger. Granted I felt as if both main contentions were left untouched, con did a better job debating this and put forth more effort. He slightly touched pros contention with a slim response and pro verily touched cons at all if at all.

Reasons for voting decision: There was no competition here. Pro dropped EVERYTHING last round, and didn't tackle Con's Human Rights argument. Pro gave no good argument aside from calling it sick. Anorexia can be as natural to some as obesity is to others. The other voters should be ashamed of how they evaluated an entirely one-side match.

Reasons for voting decision: PRO made an argument, which CON ignored and instead opted to complain about the lack of an enforcement mechanism -which is beyond the scope of whether or not something should be implemented. Not having a standard is not a reason to negate, and CON never actually argued against the thrust of PRO's argument, however brief it was.

Reasons for voting decision: There is almost no clash in this Debate. Each debater offers an entirely new set of arguments every round, and the only issue I see either debater engaging each other on is Gwyneth Paltrow. I vote Pro, as he very clearly sets the round up to discuss Anorexia, and Con fails to engage him here. Con claims that pro fails to provide a standard for which bodies would be banned from modeling, but Pro does provide that standard. Anorexia. I find Con's argument of varying body types pointless. Anorexia isn't a body type, it's a mental illness which causes people (not just women) to starve themselves nearly to the point of death.
