What is reality? for the purpose of this debate(philosophy),i contend that reality are the things that man can never change, by this definition death is reality, something that no human being can escape. it goes without saying that my existence is reality, i eat, i breathe, i live, i love, i anger, i hunger, i hate, i forgive, i am human, i am reality. The things we can never change hence are the things that define reality. That which we can change and have power to control constitutes a delusion, a dream that we forcefully define as real, a true matrix.
It would then be logical to accept philosophies and ways of life that accord reality its rightful place, however in this day and age, our beliefs( for the most part) have become so shallow that they do not recognize anything besides material satisfaction. Death has no role in modern philosophy accept as a stop to the economic activity of an Individual. Napoleon, Shaka Zulu, Ceasar , Colombus, Keynes, Darwin, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Churchill, Roosevelt, Kennedy, which of these men was not concerned domination / and material benefit? We rejoice in the legends of men whose accomplishments should be meaningless, these men are not here today and would certainly never know of me and you and the millions that sell their souls to their writings and intellect.
The notion, " the pursuit of happiness" is ambiguous in the sense that any person can define this as he or she sees fit, and it does not lend weight to the things that man should consider important, the total purpose of life becomes to pursue happiness but the fact that we procreate and love is indicative that life is more than about the pursuit of desires, a struggle that in its absence, life would seem meaningless all this simply shows how shallow man has become.
A man on his death bed is fully aware of reality, the term pursuit of happiness is meaningless, so are the 10 Bentleys he has in his drive way or the gold plated items in his inventory; the medical equipment attached to him is only a source of hope for his loved ones, he stares at them knowing they can not help him for love can not save him, it is a realization too late and as such , modern man realizes too late what true reality is. Gone is the merchandise and all ideologies of life, democracy can never save him, human rights can never honor him, equality can not help him, equal rights will never affect him. The philosophies many follow today have enriched us materially but bankrupted us spiritually, this is why injustice is not condemned but praised when it brings material gain, the strong start unjust wars on the weak and are held in high esteem for their evil. The comforts of technology, a disease that has no moral bearing embolden man to embrace his most sinister desires.
it is like the parable of the man that sees a fire coming but because it is far and he has some seeds, he decides to plant in the hope that the fire will not reach him or when it does it will have burnt out and when it reaches him, he is left in utter despair. This is modern man, the one that thinks only of the now, his medicine , his technology, his philosophy can not allow him to think beyond that. Knowledge of reality does not change reality, but willful ignorance of true reality corrupts man and removes his sense of accountability.
Life becomes a circle, live, die, buy and sell....NEXT! This is the story of modern man, without economic activity, he is but a piece of flesh; being aware of true reality will not negate the need for man to engage in economic activity of become ascetic , rather it would put accountability into the equation and by that account would at least make him wiser.
It comes down to the central question, what is the purpose of life? Is it to satisfy all material desires? or is there more to it? How can there not be more to it when man is aware that somethings he is powerless to change? This is a question modern man finds answered for him in millions of classrooms around the world, being fed garbage to replace the ability to reason.
Modern man has become blinded by his technological powess , thinking himself immortal, he is become fooled by his comforts and amused by his philosophies.
The knowledge of true reality is not meant to cripple man, but rather to humble him, that despite his conquest of earth, he too shall be conquered , it ignites a search for purpose, that transcends saving to buy the next iphone. it puts things into perspective, if every journey must come to an end or has stops that i must make, must i not prepare for my journey or my end? This is something we lack , instead we spend our time in frivolous things and mock men who seek more to life, and one may argue that all the modern comforts and what not are for man's social and economic improvement, i do not disagree but they should not be at the cost of his humanity, should man fool himself while he has reason, i say no.
Reality is not just death, it is the things that we instinctively know are true, can a man have an extreme abundance of wealth while millions die of hunger and feel content with himself? For modern man, that is a yes, because that is all he knows......the embodiment of selfishness, he does not subscribe to the notion that his extreme economy injustice will ultimately lead to a conflict that may consume his wealth, a reality that has been played out countless times in history, but how many men learn from history? All say perhaps it is me that shall succeed. Look at the tragedies caused by social evils like drunk driving but still man can never allow to control his desire to save even one life because his philosophy will not allow it. Even our pastimes are a reflection of our dire state, if people can worship sports teams and celebrities, knowing that there is no possible benefit of this in the long run, how can we expect more from them? Life simply revolves around frivolities, the modern man's dependent.
i argue that one of the many side effects of this is the rampant and ever progressive drug abuse, an internal realization by modern man that his delusion can not delude him any further, this among many other apparent and hidden examples show the folly of the modern cocoon we take such pride in.
It is for this same reason that we take pride in porn and porn-stars( how can a porn actor be glorified as a star?) , because we are unaware of reality and as such have no sense of shame or right or wrong, life is simply about carnal desires. We mock our ancestors as barbaric and backward, yet many of them lived far more noble lives, lives that were more than just about the now. The works of Plato, Socrates has lived on because they subscribed to a reality of life, and to the religious folk, prophets are the ultimate flag bearers of reality, not so (many) modern man, his desire is......

i shall do any rebuttals in the last round.

For technology to be popular and effective in the sense being presently discussed, it has to have a motivational edge that can act on a person's self interest. To this end, the engineers

Once a year, (if possible), I and 1-3 freinds take a 14 days "survivel trip"... And it is true. After 2-3 days without food you (re)discover "basics" in life.

@alan.ginger , it would but i think it makes the debate more interesting when opponents can convince voters without limitations.

It would be important for both sides to define terms like reality before actually debating.
