Money has many limitations and can not work alone.

Imagine that a company increases the salary of an employee expecting and increase in the performance.

Has this employee the knowledge to increase the performance at the work place?
If the answer is no, it will not be able to increase the performance because it will not know how to increase the performance. So, money is limited by the knowledge.

However, think that this employee has the knowledge. Has this employee the freedom to increase the performance at the work place? If the answer is no, the employee will not be able to increase the performance. So, money is limited by the freedom of the employee.

On the other hand, there are other factors better than money, such as, a meaningful job and supporting progress.

If the job is not meaningful for the employee, an increase of money could increase the performance few time and after that, the employee will feel useless, boring and therefore will decrease the performance. If the employee likes the job and it"s meaningful, it will do what ever impossible to do the best.

The employee needs some way to know that he is increasing the performance. Other way, the employee will be lost. Maybe, it thinks that he is doing a better job when actually it is doing a worse job. When the employee knows that it is doing a better job, it is happier, and increases the performance.
