More Action Should Be Taken to Restrict Ownership of Firearms, Not the Firearms Themselves.

There are great argument on both sides of the gun control topic, however I fail to see a reaping of benefits from both sides to come together and solve a common problem. Black and white debating is not debating, it's arguing. To come together and solve a problem, people need to find solutions from both ends. This is my argument regarding gun control and the focus on restricting the firearms itself rather than laws and regulations focusing on ownership.

Simply put, we all should know by now that the firearm itself is nothing but a tool used for food and justice in the right hands. The age old counter argument of guns not killing people, people killing people is overused, but holds more truth than most arguments on the topic. Too many things focus on the direct object of question rather than the cause, effect and reason for its happening. Firearms are tools used by the military, law enforcement and civilians alike. Reasons and usage vary, but if we can entrust a soldier to carry a handgun and view him or her with respect, why can't we do the same when we see a civilian legally doing the same? Our militaries, law enforcement and guards alike are all comprised of individuals just like you and I, so why the fear of those not in uniform who are armed and legally granted the right to do so? The reasons are simple, if they are not in uniform or do not specify that they are involved in those groups, we assume they are dangerous and armed for the purpose of wrong doing. Requiring a license to carry has helped a lot in this sense, but more should be done to deter those intending to do wrong and be a minor delay and inconvenience to someone with good intent. If you're serious about the responsibility of owning a firearm, this should not be an issue. Aside from a license to carry and a background check, more should be done.

- License to OWN any firearm (costing a small fee).
- Background check along with medical history check and drug screen to be updated periodically.
- Required to pass firearm safety course.
- For fully automatic firearms, additional license and safety course needed.
- (?) waiting period.

Seeing as how most crime is committed in a panic and emotional/drug induced state of mind, all this should deter most last second persons attempting to purchase a firearm. Also, the personal owner to owner buying and selling of firearms should be taken just as serious. Only those with a license to own a firearm may purchase a gun regardless of where or from whom. A firearms may be a tool, but a right...however a right granted to those persons capable and willing to accept the responsibility of ownership. The notion that any citizen should own a firearm with little to no restriction for any purpose or of any type is outdated and terrifying.
Lastly, if you pass these requirements...you should be more than capable mentally and physically to own a gun...but restriction on the firearm itself is the equivalent of dulling razor blades because they can be deadly in the wrong hands. For their purpose, they NEED to be sharp, and it's the same for a firearm. Any weapon deemed suited for self defense should be more than adequate to do so. No reduction or removal of capacity, action or function and no addition of components.

Ok, I'm sorry, but I always agreed with you. I was new to the database "debate.org", and I was just testing something (learning how to use this website). i'm sorry, but you win. I totally agree with you.
