This is for the DDO Olympics Talent Event - http://www.debate.org...

Actual debate starts in round 2. We'll both be doing music. I'll be doing original pieces, and GCL will also do some poetry, but primarily this challenge is about the music. Have fun listening! Voters should choose whom they believe to be more talented on the basis of the talents we demonstrate in the debate. Remember that only the official voters' votes will be counted for the DDO Olympics though.

Good luck to my opponent and I look forward to a fun debate.

I figured I'd start with a 80s-style pop piece. Was really hard to find the time to record this (it's my birthday today) but I got there in the end! I wrote the lyrics to this song because somebody prompted me to mention troubles that I had with bullying in school over on EDEB8, and I was kind of inspired to write these lyrics after that. Originally I had planned a much longer song but cut it down because I didn't have time to record it. I'm happy enough with how this turned out though.

Looking forward to my opponent's piece!

Lyrics:

BROKEN

Imagine today being forced to face your fears
Sneak in through the back entrance for thirteen years
That's how it always appears, until you go home
Where you have no friends and you're always alone

The authorities don't really care about you
Well just see what they do, tell you it's your problem too
And they're stealing your stuff, and they tear it to bits
And they're calling you names, and they brandish their fists

And the victims of the world know the solution
But they're silenced in the bullying revolution!

(chorus)
Can you free me from the cemetary
Be my remedy cause my life's too scary
I don't want your love, I just need a friend
Cause I'm broken, one life to mend

You get it all and noone beats an eye
And you know it's not right so you have to cry
When you're brought down, it's your mind that does you in
You feel like you're worthless too, and there's no way to win

It's not your choice, to hate what you'd like to like
This is your life, and it's not alright
Counsellors, social workers, and psychologists
Just look at you to see what your problem is

If no book can help me, then I'm not beyond aid
We need to be proactive, and not be afraid

(chorus repeats)

Will you trust me? (I won't bottle it in)
Will you break me? (Fight through thick and thin)
When we reach out, when we make amends,
When we work as one, this problem ends!

(chorus repeats)

Hello and thanks for your creative song! I, however; will not be posting my written song this round, but hopefully this is okay. I tried to fluctuate it and make it a bit more interesting although its acapella. Enjoy!
Oh and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!! Hope it has been great for you!! :)

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

That last round was far too heavy. Hopefully this is a bit more fun and happy. I don't think I've ever written a more trashy pop song.

Good luck to my opponent for the last round!

AWAY FROM THE CITY LIGHTS

We're in the meadow - so far from home
We're alone in the green, we're both fourteen
And we roam - friends will text us but it's just a plus
Miss the city but that doesn't mean being lonely

I don't fret - shed worry
Together - you and me
We can stun - everyone
Doesn't matter where we are today!
Bonfires - Hurling hay
Fresh squeezed milk, no need to pay
I guess you're probably upset
Bet I can change that around

Every day we're faced with new challenges
Making beating them fun is what life really is
It's not a question of wrong or right
Just make an effort to make the best of this night

I know you feel like you're just hanging on
But you're standing strong
With your halo of bright light!
Don't get judged by society
Just come with me and
Have one party tonight!

Here we are - standing ready in the country
Away from the burden of reality
You know I'm hardly a backwoods boy
But I think this is a place that we can enjoy - if we try

Hide and seek - learn some tricks
Ride a horse - act like hicks
Or make like high society in our own country club
Sun and moon - wind and rain
Wildflowers - homegrown grain
And no noise control so we can turn it up!

We don't need to have a crowd to have the time of our life
We can live without division, do away with needless strife
We can set our own horizons, I'm sure our parents won't mind
We'll explore this world together, there's no telling what we'll find

I know you feel like you're just hanging on
But you're standing strong
With your halo of bright light!
Don't get judged by society
Just come with me and
Have one party tonight!

This may not be where we think we belong
But if we make the best of it then we can't go wrong
Show your strength! Stand up proud!
Shout it out! Make it loud!

I know you feel like you're just hanging on
But you're standing strong
With your halo of bright light!
Don't get judged by society
Just come with me and
Have one party tonight!

I grew up so far dead in my sin
Until you came and made me born again
I was lost you freed me from my sin
You gave me your grace and now I'm born again

Oh how happy
Oh how happy
Oh how happy to be in your hands

Glory to your name, glory to your Holy name
Jesus is your name, Jesus is your Holy name.

Oh how happy
Oh how happy
Oh how happy to be in your hands

Son of God, Son of Man
Lamb of God, the Great I Am
You hung on that Cross paid for my sin
You suffer God's wrath and now I'm born again

Oh how happy
Oh how happy
Oh how happy to be in your hands

Glory to your name, glory to your Holy name
Jesus is your name, Jesus is your Holy name
(Repeat once more)

My final composition for this battle is a fun celtic-style folk tune. Got a quite a few more modern influences in there as well. The statue referred to in the lyrics is the Symonds Street NZ Wars memorial (http://www.nzhistory.net.nz...) which I used to pass every day on my way to university.

My opponent has put forward some epic live performances, so this round I'm putting forward both a recorded version (first video) and a live performance. I've never done something like that before but I don't think I totally failed. My silly webcam has the video slightly out of sync but other than that I'm happy enough.

Hopefully you've enjoyed my original songs, and thanks to my opponent for a really fun battle.

PEACE KNIGHT

Saw a statue once in the city streets
On the side inscribed "Through war win peace"
Zealandia stood with an outstreched hand
Baring her breasts for all of New Zealand
And down at her feet our flag was lain
But the palm of peace they could not retain
There's no cenotaph there that I saw
Just another statue to the god of war

But the war - isn't done
And the battle - isn't won
We are still - in defense
Against ethnic - violence
Honor those - captain majors
But not one of the peacemakers
Honor those who bring the sword
Yet their true impact stays ignored

Everyone passes by the decaying statue
Cause I guess they would prefer the war memorial
Yet our war history is almost solely defeats
And nobody in the world builds monuments for peace
And inscribed in the side, it says peace is the prize
And all that they fought for is racism in disguise
We need to end all the lies, and take it to heart
That it's no prize to end a war that you start

Yeah we march - And we fight
But conflict is never right
And we kill - and we die
This I won't glorify - I am a peace knight

How happy are those whose walls are made
Who have no reason to be afraid
Yet this is a mountain we can climb
Cause castles are built one stone at a time
Every hatred built up can be unmade
Just look at the work of the peace brigade
But if the media is all you see
You think the only good guys are your country's army

So let's wage a war on misinformation
Get the word of peace out there around our nation
Get the winds of change - make them blowing strong
And maybe every single person can be blown along

Yeah we march - And we fight
But conflict is never right
And we kill - and we die
This I won't glorify - I am a peace knight

Standing on the front lines
I am staring the alter of war in the face
Torch of peace forever shines
We can resolve the vision of this place
Made with all the best intention
Their sacrifice reminds us to deplore
Violence in this great depression
Of disasters, poverty, hunger, war

Yeah we march - And we fight
But conflict is never right
And we kill - and we die
This I won't glorify - I am a peace knight

Thank you for an awesome battle! I will be posting a poem that I wrote and also posting a song I sang to with a live play piano recording (I may have messed up the original singers song, buuuuut, I gave it a try *My Heart will go on* :)
Best wishes to my opponent and his awesome posts! :)

Dirt made Clean

New tears streamin down my face.
God, don't even deserve your grace.
But you love me with such an embrace.
And it breaks me, oh to run the race.

Livin life is like the ragging seas.
On shore fallin down to my knees.
My heart cries to rid these bees.
But I know some may stick like fleas.

Slowly, but willin does my soul cling.
Promises of which, God YOU sing.
Nah, this ain't somethin like a ring.
Your the Only One True King!

Can't believe I let you n some down?
All that does is bring me a frown.
No, my life is not a joke of a clown.
It only reveals my sin of a gown.

I need You, God, to heal this heart.
It split in two that paints bad new art.
Pierce it, by your Word with a dart.
Clear it up like an empty clear cart.

Redemption is only found in You.
So, I cannot do things the way I do.
Must stay strong, not cause of who?
Repentance only comes through You

In my weaknesses, I'm made strong.
That brings me to a brand new song.
It may or may not be pretty long.
Okay, but it's not quite of a prolong.

Jesus your the wheel and I'm the car
Your taking me on a road I see as far.
I'll be clean as a spotless soap bar.
As long as your the one leading afar.

Right now, I know I cannot truly see.
But if I trust you I know all will be...
The will of you is all that is He!
To Live is Christ and flesh die in me.

if I voted i'd vote for larz...altho GCL has an angelic voice, her lyrics are...just quite not there, and larz's 3rd round got the debate in his favor, regardless of his shaky (and off-tune voice), his lyrics were fun and nice, exploring the theme of "alone together" in the country and still managing to have fun. Good try tho GCL.

Question: I pressed the link for GCL's first round performance (The Youtube link), but it said the video was private... How do I get around that?

Instrumental is fine by itself, it's just that, especially near the end, it was a bit repetitive. Similarly, there's nothing wrong with techno, the music was a little too loud, and your voice wasn't very clear. I probably could have phrased it better. And, yet again, slow songs aren't really bad, its just that it kind of dragged a bit, and was kind of dull, especially with only one instrument accompanying her.

Hey SeventhProfessor, just curious -- what's wrong with instrumental, slow or techno music? It's just that your vote reads like you were judging our music style/taste, not our musical performance/composition ability.

Reasons for voting decision: Okay here is the break down. GCL I think was the much better singer; there is no dispute here. But I am voting for Larz based on the quality of lyrics and composition produced, which to me was raw talent. Honestly, a voice over recorder or no voice at all might have helped, but his music pieces were amazing. Especially the tone in round 2. Loved it! The lyrics were also pretty great, and made sense with the song. I am giving conduct to Larz as well, because all the content in this competition was seemingly generated specifically for this debate. There wasn't any rules barring using old stuff in Round 1, but I think the fact that Larz put in more effort specifically for this debate showed that he put more time and focus into this debate. GCL's first round came from the Mrs.DDO competition, and the other two songs (judging by the date of the comments) were songs she made prior to this competition. Again, it didn't violate any rules, but it showed the amount of work put in was less.

Reasons for voting decision: Round 1: Con's song just really took the cake here. The beautiful melody coupled with the beautiful voice was, well, beautiful. Round 2: I'm giving this one to Pro. Loved the melody, song composition, lyrics - everything about it was awesome. Round 3: Pro's music was nice, but I found the song itself to have little fluctuation - seemed sort of one key-ish. (I happened to prefer the live performance.) Con's song was a bit slow, though. This is actually really tough to decide for me. Pro's talent leans toward the music composition, while Con's voice lends itself to the benefit of her songs. Overall, I generally found Con's performances better, so my vote leans in her direction.

Reasons for voting decision: In the first round, I found Pro's music a little too techno-heavy, and not really enjoyable, while I really enjoyed Con's. 2 points Con. In the second round, Pro could have taken it if it hadn't taken so long to get to the singing. Way too long for just music, and again, 2 points for Con. In the last round, Pro's was everything correct with music, and fund Con's a bit slow. 2 points for Pro.
