First round is acceptance. Second round is argument ONLY! Third and fourth are for rebuttals. Con has to explain why NYC isnt the greatest and list another city that is greater.

Greatest: Culture, livability, quality of life, food, jobs, nightlife, wealth, size, crime rate, neighboring suburbs, transportation and infrastucture, proximity to other cities, impact and importance for U.S., etc.

(1) Safety

For a city of 8 million and a metropolitan area of 18.9 million(1), New York City has become not just the country's safest metropolis, but one of the world's as well.(2) The city and surrounding suburbs also has some of the richest neighborhoods in the world where celebrities, C.E.O.'s and other very rich people live.(3) Besides that, there are also plenty of middle and lower class neighborhoods in the city itself which are also safe and thriving.(4) NYC also has a huge police force and an effective prescence on the streets, which with new tactics have drastically transformed the standard of living compared to the 70s and 80s which saw much crime and urban decay.(5)

(2) Transportation and Infrastructure.

New York City has the largest and most expansive subway system in the world, and the most ridership in America.(6) NYC also has a large public bus system including local and express and even private buses. For light rail there is the Long Island Rail Road, Metro North, PATH trains and NJ Transit which serves all of the surrounding areas of the city. The city has over 40,000 taxi cabs, car services and vans.(7) The highway system is super expansive, giving drivers the ability to get to any location in the city numerously different ways. There are 57 major bridges and 25 major tunnels in NYC. Including minor ones there are over 2000.(8) JFK Airport and LaGuardia Airport are two of the busiest airports in America with JFK being America's top airport for international traffic.(9) Port Authority also has many Amtrak trains and coach buses for traveling between cities. Free ferries also connect the city to neighboring areas through the many waterways.

(3) Business and Jobs.

NYC is the premier financial center of the United States and number two in the world.(10) It is also home of six major stock exchanges including the biggest, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.(10) Finance, real estate, insurance, law and health care form the majority of New York City's economy. It is also the premier city for journalism, mass media, publishing and advertising.(10) It is also the single largest economy in the United States.(10) New York City is also called the media capital of the world.(10)) If you can make it here you can make it anywhere. There are enormous opportunities for success here.

(4) Many Surrounding Suburbs and Cities:

There are many nearby suburbs or smaller cities that surround NYC. You can live in these places, some of which are extremely wealthy; and commute to work or school. For the middle and lower class, many parts of Nassau and Suffolk counties as well as Westchester County, Western CT, and northern NJ.

(5) Education

There are more college students in NYC then any other city in America, as well as more students imported from other states.(11) The first and second largest library systems are also here.(11) There are two Ivy League universities here, with New York University and Columbia University. There are also many other well known college such as Barnard College, Cornell University, Yeshiva University, Fordham University, St. John's University, and Pace University as well as many other famed schools in the suburbs. The CUNY public college system is the largest of its kind in the United States.(11) There are also a large amount of public high schools which are some of the top ranked in the nation.(11)


(1) Diversity

NYC is truly a cosmopolitan city. Queens is the most diverse place in the nation and possibly the world.(12) There are hundreds of ethnic enclaves and practically every culture is represented in New York City. NYC has vibrant enclaves representing everyone from Greeks, Russians, Italians, Irish, Polish, Jews. Croatians, Turks, Arabs, Indians, Pakistanis, Colombians, Dominicans, Ecuardorians, Puerto Ricans, Haitians, Jamaicans, Filipinos, Chinese, Koreans, and African Americans.

(2) Cuisine

Famous for Chinese, Italian, Indian, Greek, Turkish, Dominican, Jamaican food etc. Kosher deli's, hot dogs and Halal carts, and home to arguably the nation's favorite style of pizza in which it also reigns champion. NYC is the home of many of the country's most famous and respected restaurants and chefs. You never have to travel because you get to experience so many cultures every day.

(3) Entertainment, Nightlife and Shopping:

NYC is the leader in fashion, which explains the world class shopping in parts of the city. Practically every luxury brand is represented here and many companies have their flagship stores here by default if not offcially. There are also many historical comedy clubs and music venues. New York has seven professional sports teams. Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium are two of the most famous venues in the country. The city maintains one of the world's largest urban park systems, and contains some of the most famous city parks in the country.(13) New York City is voted America's most entertaining city in America(14), and there is always something to do. This is the city that never sleeps, bars and nightclubs are often open until 4am not to mention after hours spots. NYC beats every other city in America by a landslide with 35,721 restaurants, 3,844 bars and 400 nightclubs then any other city.(14)

(4) Music, Art, Theater, Fashion.

After Hollywood, NYC is the biggest center of television and film and largest media market in North America.(15) New York City is also considered the art capital of America, as well as the Fashion capital of the world.(16) NYC leads the country in fashion trends. Models from all over the world move here. It is the birthplace of Punk rock, salsa music, disco, house music and hip-hop culture.(16) Modern dance also was developed in NYC in the 19th century. Additionially, the city is considered the best city for museums and has the most at 734.(14) There are many world famous museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art which is the most visited Art Museum in the U.S.(16) It has been the home of many famous artists, actors, musicians and models. NYC has world famous theaters, and made "Broadway" a household name. Between the enormous amount of famous theaters in the theater district of Manhattan and other famous theaters such as The Apollo Theater in Harlem, NYC is synonomous with showtime.

(5) History, Landmarks, Skyline, Architecure

The skyline is simply breathtaking, and unrivaled in the United States. From the Empire State Building to the Statue of Liberty to the Brooklyn Bridge, to Ellis Island, the tourism in NYC is well deserved. The history of NYC and its diversity, food, criminals, music and revolutions make the city full of stories. NYC helped pioneer the skyscraper boom. NYC is also enormous, with Brooklyn and Queens being the 3rd and 4th largest cities in America if they were independant cities.(17)
