Actually, if you take into regard scientific research which is still going on, it shows that there is a link between biology and sexual orientation. You can google 'biology and sexual orientation' to find an in-depth explanation along with a scientific analysis on this subject.

Thank you for accepting this debate.

Round one was for acceptance only, not posting opening arguments. I will choice to disregard your argument until we get to round three, the section for rebuttals.

OPENING ARGUMENTS

Living in a time when homosexuality is in the spotlight, I have heard many arguments pro and con regarding this topic. One thing I have come to know is that this is a topic where people generally tend to think with their hearts and not their minds. Emotions and irrational thinking tend to sway ones point of view. It is important when reviewing a topic like this to set aside our emotions, look at the evidence we have up to this point, and make our decisions based off of logic and rational thinking. I will be debating that a persons sexual orientation is a result of ones experiences in life, rather than the specific set of genes or genetic make up you are born with.

My argument will be based off the premises that homosexuality and heterosexuality are 100% a state of mind and part of the human psyche. The American Heritage Medical Dictionary defines psyche as "The mind functioning as the center of thought, emotion, and behavior and consciously or unconsciously mediating the body's responses to the social and physical environment." (1) The human psyche is the complete and total essence of ones personality. Both conscious and unconscious. Everything we believe, everything we like, everything we enjoy, and everything we hate, is all part of the human psyche. This would include our sexual preference. Now besides our consciousness or our human psyche, the other factor at play that makes us who we are is our genetic makeup. This is the specific set of genes we are born with that make up the physical aspect of who are. How big our noise is going to be, what color are eyes will become, how tall we are going to get, are we going to be prone to any medical diseases based on genetics, ext ext. These are factors that we are born with and have absolutely no control over because they are engraved into our DNA. Now the questions becomes, what develops or affects our psyche, or more specifically, how do we develop or decide what will become our likes and dislikes. Is it the environment, or is it our genetics?

Phycologists like Harold D. Grotevant (2) have determined that it is not completely one or the other. Genes are responsible for the physical aspects such as hormone levels, chemicals in your brain, ext, and the environment is solely responsible for how we develop our personality. To give you an example, a child might be born with a taste bud that is especially stimulated when they eat pepperoni, but it is the environment and their experiences in life that determine whether or not that stimuli develops into an addiction for pepperoni pizza, or an eating disorder. Genes are responsible for the physical aspects of your body such as your chemical and biological makeup, and your preferences are developed by your environment. A lot of this development is done in the early stages of life according to www.simplypsychology.org (3)

You probably have heard a homosexual say something like "I have been this way as long as I can remember." This is more than likely because that child developed their sexual preference, based on their environment, way before they were sexually coherent. A child usually becomes sexually aware around age nine. www.Kidshealth.org provides us with an interesting article on the development of a child. (4)

In conclusion, nobody is born gay. People are born with certain genetics that make them more likely to like or dislike certain things, however it is solely the environment that determines how much those interests develop and what they actually develop into. If you were born gay, or in other words if there was a specific gay gene, it would not be labeled a sexual preference. It would be labeled a sexual obligation.

REMINDER TO MY OPPONENT: To follow the structure of this debate do not rebuttal arguments in round 2. Your first post should be to open your argument up, explain why you believe that homosexuality is a genetic makeup and not part of the human psyche. You should not argue or rebuttal any of the claims I have made. The section for rebuttals will be in round 3. Just a friendly reminder to keep this debate structured and organized based on the terms we agreed upon. :).
