First round is for acceptance only.

Only accept this debate if you believe Qatar is a legitimate location to hold the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

I shall be arguing that, based on the logic that Qatar, a country with no footballing history, no credentials in sports of any type and a horrendous human rights record, the People's Democratic Republic of Korea should be given the honour of hosting the next available World Cup.

North Korea is a viable candidate for hosting the FIFA World Cup for several reasons.

Footballing Pedigree

North Korea has a proud footballing history, having qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and put up a reasonable performance in the group stage, and qualified in the 1966 World Cup in England, coming fourth in the competition. Their most notable international fixture is probably beating Italy 1-0 in the round of sixteen of the tournament, and being 3-0 up against Portugal after thirty minutes in the quarter final, which they went on to lose 5-3. North Korea also came fourth in the 1980 Asian Cup, and reached the quarter finals of the 1976 Olympic football tournament.

There has been a football association in North Korea since the country's foundation in 1945, and has been a FIFA affiliate since 1958. This means that since the country's founding, there has been a following of football within the country, and the people of North Korea enjoy football as much as the people of any other nation.

Stadiums

North Korea has six stadiums with a capacity of above thirty thousand people, including the Kim Il-Sung Stadium, which has space for 70,000 spectators and the Rungnado May Day Stadium, the world's biggest stadium of any variety, which can hold up to 150,000 spectators. Obviously, some work would be needed to make these stadiums comply with FIFA's safety regulations, and more hotels would need to be built to accomodate the tourists flocking, but none of those things are impossible. Some of the stadiums could even be expanded to fit more spectators in.

A world cup final held in the Rungnado May Day Stadium would be an incredible spectacle, the likes of which the world has never seen before.

If we compare the capacity of North Korea's top six stadiums to other countries that have hosted or are to host the world cup such as Russia, Uruguay, Qatar, Switzerland, Sweden and Chile, there can be no questions as to whether or not the country's stadiums could handle the crowds of the World Cup.

Climate

North Korea enjoys a genial temperate climate, with warm summers that will suit players from the majority of the participating nations. This is the perfect climate for football, and FIFA's sponsors could make a lot of money from the tournament.

Political Situation

While the political situation leaves a lot to be desired, FIFA must remain committed to accepting cultures and worldviews from across the world, otherwise it would not be a truly international organisation.

Also, increased commericalisation and opening up North Korea to foreign cameras, foreign tourists and most importantly, foreign trade and investors would mean that a World Cup held in North Korea would benefit the nation in the long run and help to ease the poltical situation there.
