Con

For this debate both my opponent and I will assume that god does not exist. We will be debating on whether or not objective morality does exist in a world without god.

Definition

Objective: not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; based on facts[1]

Morality: the quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct or a system of ideas that fall into those same categories[2]

Rules

(A)No semantical arguments, or arguments based completely on wordplay or definitions.

(B)Drops will be counted as concessions.

(C)Forfeiting of any round will constitute a loss of all 7 points.

I will ask that my opponent bring their arguments in the first round.

You know what, I'm afraid I must forfeit this debate. I've been thinking about it and researching it, and I really don't think I can make a compelling case that objective morality can exist without God (and I really don't think one can be made). I apologize to my opponent for wasting a debate, and I will forfeit future rounds quickly so as not to drag it on. I would encourage my opponent to begin this debate again with someone who could argue this better.

Con

My opponent has forfeited this debate. It's a shame really seeing as this is the second time I've tried to do this debate.
KeytarHero

Pro

Yeah, the problem is I really don't think objective morality exists apart from God, but objective morality does exist. I could argue for that, but not while leaving God out of it.

Oh well. I'm going to challenge someone else after this is over. Third times a charm right?

Yes. Good luck in your next debate. This should go without saying, but vote Con.

Ah. I guess I got a point for conduct.

Really? I had no idea. Thanks, OreEle. I will keep that in mind for the future.

Also, why on Earth do I have one point?

Keytar, if you forfiet the first round (let your time expire) it backs you out from the debate, allowing someone else to accept it.

Yeah, I really don't think I can make a compelling case that objective morality exists without God. Apologies, but I must forfeit this debate. I will have to be more careful when accepting debate challenges in the future.

"I think the rules of this debate may be too rigid for my tastes."

There are a number of DDO members that engage in rigid debating where the resolution and OP are very specific to create a particular line of argument, the same individuals will also exploit a resolution and OP to make an obvious semantic counter argument. It is all part of what debating is about and they just enjoy that style of exchange. But there are lots of people here, you do not need to do these debates of that type if you don't want. But I would encourage you to give this one a shot as socialpinko has quality kungfu so this should be a good exchange if you give it a decent effort.

Ah, I see, Cliff. I'm still formulating my argument, but I think the rules of this debate may be too rigid for my tastes. However, I will do the best I can.

"I would just like to state for the record it's altogether unfair to just assume God does not exist and use completely secular arguments."

Note a lot of debates are not about open discussion but argument and especially over key points, this debate is strictly on the fact that an argument can me made for an objective morality without God. This is a fairly commonly debated topic, Dr. William Lane Craig for example is probably the most outspoken advocate of the position that objective morality can not be obtained without God.

"No one cares where you personally get your morality so long as you don't bring god into this debate."

The first part of this sentence is kind of amusing if you consider the context of the debate and the fact you are an atheist.

All right. I have accepted the challenge, though I would just like to state for the record it's altogether unfair to just assume God does not exist and use completely secular arguments. I am a Christian, and even though the rules explicitly assume that God does not exist, so that I don't appear to be "denying" God, I want to state right here out in the open that I do believe God exists, and I do derive my sense of morality from God.
