I think that the Patriots aren't making the teams they play look bad, but trying to show that they are the best team in the NFL and that running up the score will show other teams and people that they need respect.
KevinL75

Con

Your argument is predicated on the idea that the Pats don't already have respect - I haven't seen anything to suggest that anyone is doubting the dominance of the team this year. The Patriots' perfect record commands respect alone, and running up the score on games would likely engender resentment among commentators and fans.

But when people saw the Patriots running up the score, they thought that they were being unclassy, but they just want to win and they don't care how much they win by. The Patriots running up the score is saying that the spygate scandal was nonsense and they don't need to cheat to win. The game after Week 1 vs. the Chargers was a way to show that they are the best and that they could silence the media about the spygate scandal. If you go to this website http://sports.espn.go.com... you will find that the Patriots aren't trying to embarrass their opponents, but tring to use the spygate scandal as a motivation.

Con

To counter the spygate scandal, all the Patriots had to do was win games without stealing signs. It doesn't matter how much they win by - just winning without video-taping the other team's defensive signals is counter enough to the idea that the Pats only won their first game by stealing the Jets' signs.

That being said, running up the score is not necessary to dispel the spygate scandal (which happened 14 wins ago - I don't think there's any doubt now.) Since it's not necessary to counter the scandal any longer, the Patriots' running up the score will only be taken as unsportsmanlike, and not received well by fans or commentators.

Given all of those things, I think it's safe to conclude that if faced with the option, the Patriots shouldn't knowingly try to run up the score to demonstrate their superiority.

But if the Patriots don't want to be talked about on the media, running up the score is their only option. Bill Belichick in the the article in the second round shows that their team shows no mercy to anyone! Meaning that they will run up the score to 75 points, if necessary to win the game. Meaning that running up the score is unsportsmanlike conduct. Unsportsmanlike Conduct means unsportsmanlike - violating accepted standards or rules; "a dirty fighter"; "used foul means to gain power"; "a nasty unsporting serve"; "fined for unsportsmanlike behavior" but nothing says about running the score or a more simpler definition "not fair or sportsmanlike". So running up the score is like a opinion that means different things to different people.

You said: "Meaning that they will run up the score to 75 points, if necessary to win the game."

If scoring 75 points is necessary to win the game, it's not running up the score. If you think running up the score just means scoring a lot of points, then you're not using the term correctly.

Running up the score means something like instead of calling plays designed to run out the clock when you're up by 3 touchdowns with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter, you go for that extra touchdown.

It's generally considered to be unsportsmanlike and arrogant, and I don't believe it's in the Patriots' best interest to do it. I have no idea why you think the media will talk negatively about the Patriots if they DON'T run up the score, as you haven't said anything to lend credence to that idea.

What difference does it make if they score significantly more points than the other team? Are someone's feelings going to get hurt? Will it make the other team's fans feel bad? Who cares!? This is football not little league baseball. These guys know that they are going to face games where they will have to play every minute as hard as they can to win, and if all they've been doing in the second half is running the ball and kicking field goals they're not going to be as good as the can possibly be. Stop whining because your team can't stop the Pats from putting up 50. (I'm an Eagles fan btw so don't allege some sort of bias.)

Sports has foundations built from determination and respect. Obviously, Bill Belichick and the patriots are not understanding the respect half of football if they are running up the score. Alot of people say they are just trying to win, but winning is trying hard to take the lead, not trying as hard as you can when you're up 70-3. The Patriots slaughtering teams is disgraceful to the game and disrespectful to all of their opponents.

These guys are professionals. they get paid more in 1 game than most people make in a year. If their beinig paid that much... they can run up the score on you anytime they want simply because of the fact that ou should be embarressed that you did not prepare well enough for them. You are being paid millions just to play a game. they need to remember that. and also millionares arguing with billionares for more money just pisses me off. thats why i like college football more. in the pros you get paid the same amout if you win or lose. in college and high school... thats where the true love for the game is. well anyways my point is that these people get paid enough that they shouldent be in a situation where it is even discussed "Hey are they running up the score?" because the games should be way more competitive. they say always go 101% every play. If there going 100%, blowouts would never happen.

Hey ruth the Pats are 14-0 not 13-0 and who has been hurt on their theam this year to the magnitude of a Marvin Harrison for the Colts. You can't lie...the Colts dominated 3 quaters of that game and with a healthy Marvin Harrison they would have won.

NE has played many games with
"stars down". We work hard to
maintain our 13-0 status. We
have a good team, we take thee
other team down{even when our
best players are screwing up}.
That isn't meant to be arrogant,
just fact.
Hope & Peace,
Ruth

Again, I can't wait for a HEALTHY Colts team to embarass NE in the AFC Championship. Eeking out a 4-point win when IND was missing three star players. Not to mention that now IND has the blueprint from the Balt/Phi games. They are a good team who will actually be able to implement it. Can't wait.
