Did Paul believe in a (recent) historical Jesus?

Contrary to arguments that Paul, in his letters, never claims to believe the Jesus of his theology to have been a (recent) historical figure, I plan to argue that Paul did, indeed, believe his Jesus to have been a (recent) historical figure—a man of flesh and blood. I contend that Paul's Jesus can be solidly established as an historical figure (i.e., that Paul believed Jesus to have been an actual person) and that it can be weakly established that Paul regarded this figure to have been recent to his own time (i.e., to have died within less than five decades from Paul's time).

For my evidence, I will be restricting myself to any relevant contextual information (historical setting, etc.) and only the undisputed letter of Paul in the New Testament; those letters being:
  • Romans
  • 1 Corinthians
  • 2 Corinthians
  • Galatians
  • Philippians
  • 1 Thessalonians
  • Philemon
My opponent is welcomed to present his/her own sources of evidence as suits him/her.

I will be numbering each of my points as I make them to allow easy reference by my opponent (given the character limitation of this venue), and I kindly request for that my opponent return this favor.

And this rather sums up my introductory comments to the debate and issue at hand. I will leave it to my opponent to present his/her argument first, and I will begin my end of the debate with a reply to my opponents first post.

I look forward to a fruitful debate!

Well; I wasn't around for the last few days. I see someone accepted the challenge and I ran out of time for my first reply :-(. I was hoping to get six days!!

Either way; from what I am reading it doesn't appear that this will be too much of a debate. I'll wait for Con to post his argument then to see if it is really is going to be worth my time or not.

Crap, I think Con will be a waste of time. :-(

Con (walrus) already wasted his first round, and in the past he has treated all of his debates as no more than a joke. Well, bummer. Don't waste too much of your time on this, J.Maximus.

Con doesn't know that 'I' should be capitalised. This doesn't bode well.

I'm surprised Tatarize (sp?) didn't take it, but he's not on much anymore. I'm interested in seeing how this turns out - I feel like there will be a lot of productive info.

Wow... for as many angry atheists who act like NT experts (izbo and larz specifically) as there are on this site... I'm surprised no one picked this up yet.

Vorkosigan backed out, so the debate is now entirely open for a contender. I wrote up a challenge and invitation in a thread of the Religion forum here: http://www.debate.org...

Well, yeah, if you pick just those Christians... ;-)

Again though, my opinion is probably colored by the forums and those people don't really participate on the forums.
