I'm standing at pro Pc and my opponent will be pro Mac or con pc, whatever you want to say.
A fully loaded Imac will put you out around $3,000. But a fully loaded Hp TouchSmart IQ800t series with Blue ray, and blue tooth, a wireless keyboard and mouse, for $1,700. even a watered down Mac costs $2,000. Pc also has a vast compatibility with gaming and random stuff for hacking, moding and all the good stuff like that. the debate itself is about all of Mac and PC including price, sorry for the confusion.
==== CONTENTION I: MACS ARE PCS ==== Current macintosh computers are indeed PCs. PC is an abbreviation for 'personal computer.' If that isn't enough to show that Macs are in fact PCs, the Oxford dictionary defines 'personal computer' as "a microcomputer designed for use by one person at a time." [1] This is obviously the case for Macintoshes, especially since they use the exact same hardware as other PCs. Just like with Windows-based or Linux-based PCs, Macintosh-based PCs can o nly be used by one person at a time [in contrast to a server, which is designed to be used by many people at a time]. The only reason my opponent, and many others, have decided that macs are not PCs is because of the horrible advertising done by both Apple and Microsoft. Heck, you don't have to take my word for it. Here's what PC Magazine's Lance Ulanoff has to say about it: "If the [Macintosh] ad were accurate, John Hodgman (the actor who plays the "PC") would say, "I'm a PC," and Justin Long (the actor who plays the "Mac") would say, "And I'm a PC, too." Why? Because a Macintosh is a PC! " [2] So what does this mean? If a Mac is a PC, then a PC cannot be better than a Mac. It's like saying "Fruits are better than apples" or "Cars are better than Fords." Now, of course, it would be possible to say "Some PCs/fruits/cars are better than Macs/apples/Fords", but that is not what my opponent is saying. He is saying that the group 'PCs,' not some specific member of that group, is better than Macs. It makes no sense. [1] http://www.askoxford.com... [2] http://www.pcmag.com... ==== CONTENTION II: CAPABILITIES ==== Since Macs use the same hardware as other normal X86* PCs, they have the same capabilities. Want to play game X, but it's only available on Windows? That's fine - you can install Windows on a Macintosh. That didn't used to be the case, since Macs used to use non-X86* CPU architechture. However, this debate is in the present, where Macs can run windows or linux if they need to. The capabilities of Macs and other PCs are not exactly the same, though. Macs are the only hardware that can run Mac OS X and any programs that only run on OS X. This includes many productivity applications, especially some related to visual arts. In fact, there are many people whose jobs require them to use a Mac. So while Macs can run Windows or Linux and therefore any Windows/Linux apps, any other PC cannot run OS X, or any OS X-specific software. ==== CONTENTION III: QUALITY OF PARTS ==== Some PC manufacturers use high quality materials, but most do not. Most PC manufacturers use cheap parts, cases of steel and plastic, bulky form factors, etc. Among the exceptions are Macs. Macs use high quality parts. The cases are made of aluminum and are very well designed. PC World did a survey of reliability for different PC manufacturers, and Macs performed quite well. They said that "Apple and Lenovo (formerly IBM) remain the most admired notebook vendors, each garnering higher-than-average scores in five categories, including customers' overall satisfaction with their service experience and with product reliability. Apple did well in desktops too, as did eMachines, which Acer recently acquired." [3] [3] http://www.pcworld.com... ==== CONTENTION IV: SUPPORT ==== Apple provides excellent support for Macs. First, I will refer you to the source I used above [3], where it notes that support was above average for Macs. But to explain that a bit, all you have to do when there is a problem with your Mac is go in to an Apple store and they will either fix it for you or replace it and transfer your data. Considering many people live within 30 minutes of an Apple store, that's unbeatable service. With most PC manufacturers, you'd have to send it in via mail [which is also an option for Mac users]. The level of support Apple offers for its products is much higher than average. ==== CONTENTION V: PRICE IS NOT A DETERMINANT OF VALUE, BUT RATHER A CONSEQUENCE THEREOF ==== I mean what I said. Ramen noodles may be a more thrifty deal than steak, but that does not mean they are better than steak. In fact, if they were better than steak, then people would be willing to pay as much or more for them. Prices higher than the average PC mean that people are willing to pay more for a Mac than for an average PC, which means that, at least in those people's minds, Macs are better than the average PC. ==== ==== ==== That is all for my opening argument - I wish my opponent luck, and I thank the audience for reading this. |

Darn nerds outsmarted me this time.
It seems reasonable to conclude that my opponent is conceding his loss. I know many men who would fail to see the futility in fighting back, but my opponent is different. For that, I thank him - he has made things easier for all of us. I look forward to an uneventful third round. Until then. |
