I have a paper in philosophy class where I am suppose to debate certain topics. "People do not value life in general, and human beings in particular." True or false and why.

It know it sounds like a ridiculous but it is a question for philosophy. I'll do pro.

Dear sir,
I am glad you have proposed this this debate. Now, if you would, as PRO, please state your definitions, resolution and reasoning, I will then respond to these at the end of round two, and we will have three rounds of pure debate.

Thanks and bon chance

I believe that people do not value life because.

1) People don't respect their own health throughout most of their lives.

2) People don't really care about other people's lives unless it is close to them. But they wouldn't care about that person if that person hurt them.

3) People live for money and just live day by day without any regards to what is important to life.

What I mean by value life is to care about it.

A shame we're doomed to a mere 1000 characters. And citations to your generalizations?

Contentions:

1.) Prove this. Man's improvement in modern medicine and decreased death rates only prove man's desire to live. Human productivity through the ages, whether in science, art, or philosophy, usually bears the intent to BETTER human life.

2.) This must be why we don't have a UN and why people don't ever donate to Africa.

3.) "without any regards to what is important to life." Value judgment, which I found to be again, a generalization, which no basis of argumentation can be formed upon. "People live for money." Think about what currency really serves. One earns money by working, which ideally, is to benefit human life. In turn, the worker is awarded money, which buys the worker food, shelter, clothing, and indulgences, which are to make the worker appreciate life more.

SniperJake,

I did not state that people live for money, my opponent did. I merely stated that money rather lives for people's sake.

Your contention 1, may be true, although it too cannot be proven, and seems fallacious.
Your contention 2, seems to be a non sequitur to me. I was stating that life has intrinsic value not necessarily that of currency.

And yeah, I am quite put off by Lazy not responding. You should challenge me to a debate! At least I can count on you to reply

Wp, you state "People live for money." Yet they don't live for life. Besides this is a situation in general not specific stuff like Africa.
1. We don't value our enemies lives in general.
2. If life has value than Wp suggests that we can trade people around as an act of currancy. (just joking:) It's just morally wrong to do so.
I despise Lazy for forfeiting and praise Wp for replying.

I guess the obvious counter argument is that only a minority commit suicide, therefore, the rest value life in general.
