People should vote on who has a better argument; NOT whose argument you actually agree with

I am making this argument in response to handsoff's comments in another debate, in regards to the fact that people can vote simply on who they agree with on the topic and forget how well the topic is actually argued. Handsoff claims that there is no crucial difference between how well a topic is argued and which side of the fence you stand on. I believe otherwise: that you are obliged to read the argument fully and vote for the opposing argument to your personal stance on an issue, even if you don't want to, if the opposing argument makes better points and is more organized, persuasive etc.

I'd love to debate you, but this may be the one and only thing on which we agree. What I meant was that if you make a "good" argument, you should be able to have most people, not only vote for you, but agree with you as well. That is, unless your opponent failed to raise some obvious points that could have undermined your argument. I have no problem voting for a winner based on debating skills alone. But keep in mind, the purpose of a debate is ultimately to sway minds (or hearts if your a liberal). We're not here merely to see who's best at slinging syllogisms.

Um. Since you agree with me I don't really have anything else to say I guess; I am used to debating people who DISAGREE with me :)

I only repsponded because you challenged me to personally to debate something on which we both agree. Lure me in and then throw me under the bus, huh? I see how it's gonna be. Just messin' with ya.

well, after a heated debate, we are finally at the end. I don't know if I can handle another one of these...

I'm sure there's something we can debate in the future. I look forward to it. Is this 100 characters yet? ljfldj fjlf ljfd;slfjfjdsfjdsfjdsfdsflfj.

Which way do I vote?

You can shoot down a challenge and pick "I do not disagree with my opponent" as an explanation.

And just to mess with you people, I'm evening out the votes.

I think it's interesting that people are voting at all. What the hell is going on here? Do you seriously have a group of people that follow you around and vote against you? How long have you been at this?

I will disregard any outcome at this point. Why is this non-debate renting space anyone's head?

sorry, that third line should say "I never would have dreamed that I would LOSE a debate like this"

indeed. This debate provides some interesting logical insight into the voting system on this site. I mean people always accuse others of voting like this, and I always kind of brushed it aside and had faith that people would actually vote (at least for the most part) based on performance, but I never would have dreamed that I would a debate like this. I was a little annoyed when handsoff took this debate without presenting any real argument, but now I believe I owe him a debt of gratitude for this opportunity to test out the utility of the voting system. I would say this proves, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the administrators of this site are going to have to come up with some way of legitimizing the votes. At the very least, the debaters should be able to see who voted in the debate so that they can identify those people who simply follow around the people they don't like and vote against them. Even better would be an obligation to provide a reason for their vote, which would have to be cleared by the person they vote FOR so that the other debater can criticize the reciever for taking bogus votes. The reciever could have the opportunity to reject votes that don't strengthen their argument, which would make their viewpoint look even more attractive. Perhaps even a voting record for each person could be considered. And what is with this option for the debaters to vote for themselves? What is the point of that?
