Should Phones be allowed in school?

I'd like to clarify my viewpoint before I begin: Phones can be brought to school, but should only be used in class if the teacher allows it, during an emergency, or during break and lunch periods.

Allowing phones to be freely used during school is absurd. The classroom is an educational setting, and for all the supporters who argue that phones are valuable educational assets clearly have never seen how teenagers use their phones in class. Many students text irresponsibly in class.

I believe children shouldn't be able to use cell phones at school. I am not just talking about using one in class, but in general at school. Not only is it a major distraction, but also, those who can't afford a cell phone, or simply don't own one, will feel extremely excluded during lunch or any other break. If all the children are on their phones, either playing games or communicating with friends, those who don't have phones for whatever reason will have troubles acquiring friends and developing useful social skills. At this point, one might see this perspective as radical and absurd, but it is rooted in logic. For instance, if all children had a particular toy, but one child did not, there would be a small social intolerance to that kid, simply because he is not like the others, and differentiation isn't valued socially. If this was the problem with phones, it would not be that big a deal, unfortunately, phones cause a much greater problem. A phone is not simply something a child occupies their time with, it can be a major platform for social communications. If one child is excluded from this wide communication network, they are singled out, and excluded. They might not get an inside joke that was made online, and for that matter, might be the butt of the joke in question. They also won't have as much time socializing with their peers and will, therefore be at a disadvantage among other people, regardless of whether the other people own or frequently use cellular devices.

Yes, phones should be allowed, but with some restrictions. Obviously, you can't use the phone during class/lab. Some kids/teens walk home and honestly having a phone kinda makes you feel safe.
