I believe pigs should be welcomed into society as an average housepet. I will begin debating once my challenge is accepted.
Thaddaeus

Con

True, pigs are spiffy, but that's the problem: if we allow Americans to keep pigs as pets, millions upon millions of people will do so, which will decrease the amount of pig meat available for consumption. The decrease in pig meat will cause the price of bacon and pork sausage to rise significantly, which will disproportionately affect poor people since poor people spend more of their money on bacon and other low-quality pig products (lard and pork rinds, for example). I guess we could reach a compromise by requiring that all people who keep pigs as pets must give up their pig (for processing) when it reaches a certain age (or weight). That way, people could play with pigs without damaging our economy.

I agree, it would mess up the economy and pork products would skyrocket, but there must be another way than giving up a beloved family pet after several years. How about this: any family that keeps a pig pledges to not eat any pig products. I'm sure they wouldn't want to anyway, as it would be like eating a family member.
Thaddaeus

Con

That's not a bad solution, except that it probably wouldn't stop the rise in pig meat prices. The typical person who'd keep a pig as a pet probably doesn't eat pig meat anyway. Essentially, we'd be making people promise not to do something they wouldn't have done anyway, and pig prices would nonetheless go way up since demand would still outstrip supply (to be more accurate, quantity demanded would outstrip quantity supplied, at least in the shortrun, but that's not all that relevant here). In other words, we'd still be taking a whole bunch of pig meat off the breakfast table without offsetting the decrease in any way. Let's face it: we can let people keep pigs as pets, but eventually those pigs will have to get eaten.

Pro

My initial point in making this debate was to justify pigs as pets, being able to take them for walks in public and such. But, in the direction we are currently in, I surrender. You win, thanks for debating. -End third and final round-

Thaddaeus forfeited this round.

"If people ate less pigs and more chicken there would be less fat people."

I somehow doubt this. I believe that the true culprit of obesity is pure laziness. Someone can eat nothing but salad and still become fat if they refuse are extremely inactive. Diet is blamed more than it deserves to be. It is time to start telling lazy people to get up and actually do something physical. I eat a ton of bacon and other meat, and I'm not at all fat.

Hoof and mouth disease. Hoofed animals are inherently susceptible to this. People can catch it and that is why hoofed farm animals are not allowed as pets within city limits. It is highly contagious. Chickens, bird flu. Much research has been done in the way of disease in animals and the threat to humans. They are not allowed as pets for a reason not because of arbitrary dislike or discrimination based on physical attributes.

i think pigs are just as equal as any other pet(ofcouse i believe are animals and humans are created equal!) but meats from pigs is actually un healty and maybe it would decrease the number of pork and ect eaten by humans and making a heatheir planet ofcourse this is and extream measurement and kinda out of contents

A bloke was walking down the street with a pig on a leash. The pig only had three legs. Another bloke stops him and asks "How come your pig's got a leg missing?" The other bloke replies: "Well, he's my pet, I couldn't eat him all at once."

I agree with both of you. Pigs can be pets and maybe food.

Reasons for voting decision: When debating this topic, any ramifications stemming from the original proposal can and should be used. Although Pro's final comment makes it seem as though Con did something unethical, I don't believe he did. Furthermore, Pro claims to have forfeited.
