Contention One: The Electoral College System protects minorities. The first minority it protects are population minorities. If the direct popular vote system were put into effect, candidates would focus only on winning the votes of large metropolitan areas with their many votes. This would leave small rural areas like Iowa without a say in the election and the new president's policies. Smaller states are given a say by having at least 3 Electoral votes. The second minority it protects are racial minorities. The Electoral College system gives racial minorities a louder voice than their population would provide. This forces candidates to include their views in policies and protects them from racial injustice. Also, the minorities' voices wouldn't be heard over the other majorities. The South has a larger percentage of African Americans than the rest of the United States. This gives them a larger say in the Electoral System than they would get in the Direct Popular Vote System.
Contention Two: The Electoral System supports a strong central government by allowing only two political parties. According to William Kimberling, the Electoral System "ensures that the President has both sufficient popular support to govern and that his popular support is sufficiently distributed. If more than two parties existed, then the government would fragment and nothing could be achieved. In the bi-party system, politicians are forced to compromise with the other party because the other party is strong. The bi-party system also limits the number of candidates down to just a few, making it much easier for voters to choose whom to vote for. If there were more candidates, someone could win the election with only 37% of the voters, making him a non-majority winner.
Contention Three: The Direct Popular Vote System would be disorganized. If the Direct Popular Vote System were implemented, the number of candidates would skyrocket creating low plurality winners. The votes would also be fractured, leading to lower vote totals per candidate and closer votes that would need a recount. Problems with the system would be more difficult to fix. The Electoral System has 528 voters compared the Direct Popular Vote's 235,809,266. National recounts would be a nightmare. According to Hans von Spa
