I assert that pokemon is the most successful gaming franchise in the world. t has been multiple gaming platforms, such as DS, GBA, N64, Gamecube and computer. It has its own trading card game. It has its own TV series. It is popular across many age groups and is very accessible, as well as enjoyable. No other gaming franchise is as popular.

This is an interesting topic. I will be debating that Mario is more successful and widespread than Pokemon.

The first mario game was released in 1981 since then mario games have been seen on GBA, NDS, WII, Gamecube, Nintendo 64, SNES, NES and Arcade. There are over 200 different Mario games which have collectively sold over 200 million copies.[1] whilst pokemon has only sold something over 186 million copies.[2] The Mario games appeal to as many, if not more age groups than pokemon.

Good point- However, it should be noted that those statistics were prior to the Heart Gold and Soul Silver editions on DS being available.
-In Australia, over 50,000 units were sold in one week. In the United States the games managed collective sales of 1.73 million in their first month, with SoulSilver version selling 1.01 million and HeartGold selling 761,000 units. The combined sales of the two games make them the highest selling games of March.
-In Japan, the games sold 1,480,980 units within the first two days of release, topping the Japanese sales chart that week. Within two weeks, the games had sold a combined total of over two million units. As of December 18, 2009, the games have sold over 3,228,000 copies.
These stats combined, and assuming that the games sold for 50 AUD each, thats 1.73x10^6+3.228x10^6=50000=5008000 games sold, times 50, giving about 25 million dollars in sales, meaning that they outsold the mario franchise, even without the inclusion of sales since then.
Money aside, I also contend that those who play the pokemon franchise are a more loyal fanbase and immerse themselves in the experience. While mario is certainly a pop culture icon, Pokemon is of a similar, if nor higher status in Japan. Western countries fail to comprehend the status of 'fads' in Japan. In Japan, pokemon has its own regular TV show- pokemon sunday. Youtube has an episode of the HG and SS announcement-

-Pokemon are popular for all age categories, as is obvious for any person who uses the 4chan vidya board, where pokemon general threads are on nearly every page.
-Not only is the video game franchise popular, pokemon also maintains a healthy movie and music collection- there are 10 music albums available and 12 movies, not to mention the 3 series of pokemon anime. http://en.wikipedia.org...
-In this respect, pokemon achieves a more widespread experience through its foray into multiple entertainment mediums, as well as its sales making it the most successful.

I'd like to thank my opponent for his quick response.

"1.73x10^6+3.228x10^6=50000=5008000 games sold"
My opponents calculations are wrong. Once you add up all units sold in different countries, you get a total of

50,000 units sold. How can 50,000 become 5,008,000 units sold.
If he means to add 50,000 units of heartgold/soulsilver to the previous games sold then it would be:
186,000,000
+ 50,000
------------
186,050,000

Even with the release of soulsilver and heartgold, the pokemon franchise is still outsold by Mario games.

"-Pokemon are popular for all age categories, as is obvious for any person who uses the 4chan vidya board, where
pokemon general threads are on nearly every page."
As I already stated Mario games appeal to as many, if not more age groups than pokemon. In fact Mario probably
appeals to more. Young children and adults alike enjoy Mario games[1] whilst pokemon games do not appeal to adults
as much.

"-Not only is the video game franchise popular, pokemon also maintains a healthy movie and music collection- there
are 10 music albums available and 12 movies, not to mention the 3 series of pokemon anime."
The same for Mario.[2] Both have movies and anime however we are debating the success of the games and not other
medias so the success of their other adaptations doesn't matter.

"-In this respect, pokemon achieves a more widespread experience through its foray into multiple entertainment
mediums, as well as its sales making it the most successful."
As I already stated there is not a single entertainment medium on which pokemon is available but not Mario. Plus, Mario has more games on all of those entertainment mediums.

"I also contend that those who play the pokemon franchise are a more loyal fanbase and immerse themselves in the
experience. While mario is certainly a pop culture icon, Pokemon is of a similar, if nor higher status in Japan.
Western countries fail to comprehend the status of 'fads' in Japan."
Against all the other evidence that presented that is not enough to make pokemon more successful. In addition, the
games are played all over the world and not only in Japan, although it is the country of origin for both games.

To conclude, Mario games have sold far more units than pokemon games. They target a wider demographic than Pokemon games and are just as widespread as pokemon games. In light of this and all the other evidence I presented, I negate the resolution. Vote Con.

I bet final fantasy could contend with pokemon in this kind of debate. But if wouldnt beat mario. And thats only if you consider each game to count as the same franchise though there plots have nothing to do with each other. exept for spin-offs like derge of cerebrus and X-2

Good point Korashk; thought that inferno meant money made from sales; obviously I didnt read it carefully enough. Looking at the votes, its reasonable to assume you've got this one inferno. Thanks for the debate.

186 mil + 5 mil still =/= 200 mil.

Comparing the Mario TV Show and movie to those of Pokémon probably wasn't a good idea, but redinferno won overall.

sorry- that = is meant to be a plus. Poor typing skills. If you read the source its 50000 for australia, plus 1.71 million for america and another 3 million for Japan, giving 5 million.
