Politicians often claim a Christian background, but American politics are rather unchristian.

I've heard many political conservatives invoke God's blessing on our nation and on our troops. Unfortunately, there's nothing Godly or Christian about the pro-war position conservatives often gravitate to. Many political liberals are also guilty of this same inconsistency, but I feel conservatives are more war-prone than liberals.

Jesus instructed us to love our enemies and do good to them. Instead, we ask for God's blessing as we bomb and destroy our enemies -- actions that I believe no TRUE Christian could condone.

I believe we should stop asking for God's blessing, and ask for his MERCY. War and violence is an affront to Jesus and his teachings in the Bible. Destroying human life, God's creation, is a heinous departure from the teachings of Christ. This debate is not about the legitimacy of the Iraq war or any other war. It is about the inconsistency of a purported Christian devotion crossing with support for any violence or war.

I hope the Lwerd returns for the second round!

In this round I will demonstrate my personal favorite teaching of Jesus', that in Matthew 5:43-44, he says

"You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you"

Preemptive and redemptive violence are policies historically adopted by the United States, but Christians are instructed to practice neither of those. Our devout Christian leaders seem to be doing a poor job...

You also didn't explain the passage in Romans I provided. I agree with you that most politicians are not living Christian lifestyles. Even the ones who claim it. I would argue that for different reasons though.

Re: DanDebates. You still didn't explain the Old Testament examples of GOD telling Israel to wipe pagan nations out completely. In fact, there were times when GOD punished Israel for NOT completely destroying nations. The point that Jesus is making in the New Testament is that no one should ever try to spread Christianity by force. His kingdom is not of this world. Deadly force for self-defense or the defense of others is not what He's talking about.

I disagree with you Zero. I see this as an oprotunity well taken.

I would have liked to see a good debate by theLwerd, but if she would have another intresting debate I would conclude that the person who made mutiple acounts would just vote against her again, createing an unfair judgement. Im disapointed but not suprised when people do this.=(

Haveing this debate theLwerd sought and took and obvious mistake and exploited it.

It would be hippocratical too avoid the fact that all who have debated always try to exploit their antagonist's blunder or used one of the many techniques used to gain the people's opinion. (mudslinging is the funniest to watch).

So I must point out that you cannot blame theLwerd for takeing the easy way out... oh wait you can... you cannot JUDGE theLwerd for takeing the easy way out.

I end my case with 1,120 characters remaining.

I voted in favor of the instigator. The contender didn't mention the mistake of the positions being mismatched until the instigator was no longer able to respond, thus, I am obligated to dismiss it.

I think that by by allowing himself to be slaughtered, he set an example for us. He did NOT use defensive or preemptive violence.

Self defense as you put it is as much about preservation as it is about destruction. You are not preserving life by killing the killers. That's not preserving life at all. Preserving life means to be committed to completely non violent resolution.

right to life, so that He could die for us. If you have any doubt in what I've said look up the Bible verses for yourself.

GOD says do not take life, but in the Old Testament He commands Israel to wipe certain pagan nations out. Since we know that GOD is perfect we know that there must be some kind of reconciliation between these two seemingly completely different orders. All GOD's laws reflect His perfect character. "Do not murder" reflects a part of GOD's character. GOD created man and said His creation was good. We ought not destroy something GOD has said was good. We should preserve something GOD created and said was good. Therefore, with "do not murder" comes preserve life. 2 Samuel 11:1 says "It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle." There was a designated time of the year when pagan kings went out to battle!! Without having an army built up, without going to war, Israel would have been slaughtered. If Israel had allowed themselves to be slaughtered then they wouldn't have been preserving life would they? We have a right and a responsibility to protect ourselves and others. This is all the government was doind when we attacked Iraq. Protecting ourselves and protecting the citizens of Iraq. Romans 13:4 says "For he [the government] is GOD's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he [the government] does not bear the sword in vain; for he [the government] is GOD's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practises evil." People often get confused as to what Jesus is talking about. When Jesus says love your enemy, He is saying pray for them, earnestly desire their salvation. Work hard for their salvation. He's not saying let them kill you. Many people try to point out that when Peter cuts off the ear of the high priest Jesus says "put away your sword." After that however, He says that if He wanted to He could call down legions of angels and win a battle. Jesus isn't condeming using a sword in self-defence, or in defence of others, He's saying He had a mission to finish and was giving up the...
