Poison is bad because posion can really kill you. Poison is also toxic. Poison is bad because people use it for murder or assinations. Poison is a drug.

Con

Thank you to my opponent for creating this debate, and I hope for a good exchange.

My opponent's contention is that poison is bad for you. I will now state situations in which poison is not necessarily bad for you, but is good for you.

http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com...

poison /poison/ (poiz'n) a substance that, on ingestion, inhalation, absorption, application, injection, or development within the body, in relatively small amounts, may cause structural damage or functional disturbance.poisonous

For the purposes of this debate, we shall use this definition of poison from the medical dictionary.

As such, please note that poison is not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, it simply causes damage or functional disturbance.

FACT: All drugs are poisons. My opponent has stated this himself, so we take it to be inarguable fact.

This does not just include narcotics like cocaine and heroin, but also Claritin, Tylenol, Advil, etc.

Suffice to say, we use many of these poisons (which cause functional disturbance) to disturb an already present disturbance!

Let's take the example of Lidocaine

http://www.medicinenet.com...

Lidocaine, when injected, causes structural and functional disturbance to your nerve cells. However, it is used to numb an area so that one does not feel pain. Perhaps when they undergo a simple surgical procedure like a root canal.

Meclizine Hydrochloride, aka Dramamine II is a poison that impacts your body's specific histamine receptors, that's bad right? Not necessarily. It blocks the histamine receptor associated with the emesis reflex (aka vomiting). Thus, although you are causing a functional disturbance to your body, it is a disturbance that is good if you are flying long distance and tend to get airsick.

Loratidine, aka Claritin, is also an antihistamine that blocks histamine receptors of your cells in general. This is used to prevent allergic reactions to things like pollen and pet dander, even though it is blocking a natural body process.

Thus, my opponent is wrong when he says that poisons are bad. Poisons are not always bad, they are sometimes good. Very good.

I look forward to my opponent's response. Thank you.

Paracetamol is the same as Tylenol, I live in America. It is a pain medication.
Vitamin K is important for body function, it is naturally produced in the body.
Warfarin Sodium is known as Coumadin in the U.S. and blood thinners help with high blood pressure.
Opioids aid in pain relief.
Iron and many other heavy metals are vital for human function.
Benzodiazepines help anxiety.
Organophosphates are good for killing insects.
Calcium Channel blockers and Beta blockers are also used for blood pressure.

2. My class notes

These are all examples of ways in which poison is good for us.

I thank my opponent for supporting my point in saying that many poisons are indeed good for you. However, I must emphasize that my opponent should be trying to argue that "Poison is bad for you" as he is the "Pro" side. If he continues to bring up points that help my side, I won't have much to say.

I hope my opponent decides to offer arguments in the final round, and I thank the audience for their patience.

No, it's not an atrocity. It's just silly.

And my making a semantic argument is a moral atrocity because the topic is obviously a serious topic of debate, right Roy?

My opponent never challenged my definitions. But hey, to each his own. You vote the way you want to.

Con is making a semantic argument in which "poison" is taken to mean something which is good for you overall, but which has or may have a toxin side effect. That's just baloney. The meaning of the resolution was made clear by Pro's opening statement. "Poison" was taken to have the common sense meaning of something that is predominantly toxic and intended to damage or kill. A vote for Con is just licensing lawyers to screw defy common sense.

Things like Magnesium and iron are necessary for bodily function. Your blood cells need iron to carry oxygen around your body.

Also, alcohol is a poison. Though I would argue that drinking alcohol is good for you! =)

C: PRO didn't offer much in terms of the debate, and did not quite understand the path of the debate. Points go to CON.
S&G: PRO had very short, awkward, and curt sentences. It made the writing very odd. Points go to CON.
A: PRO didn't have much going for him in this debate. Only CON seemed to have tried. Points go to CON.
S: PRO only provided a wikipedia article on drugs, CON provided more sources of better quality. Points go to CON.
