Posting links in a debate should be against the rules. It allows debaters to far exceed the character limit set forth as a boundary. Most of the web sites utilized are pure propaganda and do little to further the debate. Anyone can publish anything on the internet, so there is little to keep any of the information accurate.

The act of posting a link is usually not for the purpose of extending someone's argument. It is to give the argument credibility. If people just make arguments or use statistics and do not state the source, the argument has less credibility. Even if they do say "according to ", voters will have a very hard time finding that information. However if a link is posted, the voters can quickly view the source. You said that the sites might be propaganda. If this is the case, the voter will almost always realize this. Most people can distinguish between CNN or Fox News and some wacko Idea Farm site. Also even if links cannot be posted, people will just post the URL of the site. The bottom line is: Links don't hurt debates, they help them.

I have no issue with citing your source. If they were used in debates for that purpose, but they seldom are. In general they are used as part of an argument. When I see them it is ussually "read this link, my argument is whatever it says." Very seldom do you see, "here is my argument, this backs it up." If anything there should at least be a disclaimer stating "you should not use any linked data in your judgement."

In a real debate, you can only use as much evidence as you have time to read; here you should only be able to use as much evidence as you are able to type under the character limit.

We are probably looking at different debates, because I see mostly citing of information. Anyway most people don't even read the entire debate much less the links. I will repeat that even if their was a rule against posting links it would be very hard to enforce because people would just say, "post this link". The bottom line is that links add credibility and don't harm debates.

This is totally stupid

How are you going to prove a point in a real debate without using references

Anyone who would argue the pro side here is simply trying to limit debate to their own little world , which is meaningless

this site has VERY few intelligent people

I am not saying you can not use references I am saying you should not be able to use linked information. If you have ever had a "real debate" you would know that if you want to use evidence you do not just get to site it and say "read here." and then hand the judge a pile of notes, you have to read the evidence. Debates need to have limits.

When you wrote research papers, you didn't get to just give a cite page; you had to put the information in the paper that you wanted to use.

I wasn't saying that Fox was less credible CNN (in fact i prefer Fox) I was making the point that people could realize the difference between respected sources like CNN or Fox and bad ones like Idea Farm.

Don't forget that we're measuring how well these two present their arguments, not which position we agree with more.

I agree that links should be allowed.

But, foxmulder, if you are suggesting that Fox News is less accurate than CNN, you have not been watching the news.
