I am a bored man. I thought this would be a interesting topic to go on about before I start school in a week haha.

I think President Nixon is a good president because of all he's accomplished while he was in office.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Foreign policy
President Richard Nixon had excellent success in Foreign Policy. He was the first President to go to China. While In China Nixon met with then leader Mao Zedong where Nixon acknowledged the Chinese form of Government then forming peace with the Chinese and opening trade with China, who today is one of the U.S top trading partners. Ever see those stickers on the items you purchase "made in China"? well say thank you to Richard Nixon.
Nixon plan called "Dtente" helped ease tensions between the Soviets and the U.S during the time of the cold war. After meeting with the Soviet's Leader Leonid Brezhnev. Nixon and Brezhnev was able to come to an agreement where nuclear arms will not be used by either sides. This allowed the U.S to stop spending so much money on nuclear arms and start focusing on the welfare state.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Civil Rights
Nixon passed many bills to help Woman's rights. It is because of Nixon that Women have equal pay and equal employment opportunities in the United states with his Equal pay and Equal employment acts. It was also during Nixon's time that abortion was legalized. (Roe V Wade) Nixon was pro choice and believed that when a woman is raped abortion should be a option.
Nixon believed that racism was a moral failure in the United States and worked to desegregate schools. Nixon greatly enforced the desegregation of all schools after the decision of the supreme court "Alexander v. Holmes County Board of Education." Only 18% of black school children attended all black schools a 70% decrease from when Nixon came to office.

"In this sense, Nixon was the greatest school desegregator in American history," historian Dean Kotlowski concluded.
Author Conrad Black concurred: "In his singular, unsung way, Richard Nixon defanged and healed one of the potentially greatest controversies of the time.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Environment
Nixon's Environmental policies were the greatest of any president. It was the Nixon administration that started the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Nixon signed environmental bills like the Clean air and water acts. These bills allows the EPA to enforces regulations to protect the public from being exposed to hazardous contaminants that effect the human health.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nixon first year in office was also the first time the United States sent 3 men to the moon making the U.S the first nation to ever do so. Later on Nixon approved the NASA space shuttle program allowing Americans to explore space for decades afterward.

With all that Nixon has done for the United States of America. I think makes him a good president.

Nixon was a demeaning President for the following reasons:

1. Nixon cut NASA's budget, thereby making the shuttle program useless when it came into play. Originally NASA had planned on building space stations and using the shuttle (hence the name "shuttle") to take astronauts to the stations, and then send them off to different places. Nixon however, believed that after the Moon missions, there was no point. Now because of that, we have been limited to just outer orbital missions.

2. President Nixon willfully kept our men and women in Vietnam despite being advised otherwise. After four years and thousands of American lives he then decided to pull us out. Nixon was simply a fence sitter. He didn't have the guts to pull us out sooner, or win the war.

3. Watergate. Simple as that. Nixon's administration was caught illegally spying on the opposite party and involved in fraud. When confronted with this he simply denied it, despite the mounting evidence against him. When finally he was threateded with impeachment he resigned from his office as President of the United States. As historian Henry Steele Commager said Nixon was the first "Wicked President."

Nixon believed in the cause of the Vietnam War. The war to fight communism helping the democratic South Koreans to help maintain their government. But Nixon didn't start the Vietnam War he inherited it from his predecessors Kennedy and Johnson. The main point is at least Nixon did what he promised he pulled the troops out of Vietnam instead of leaving the problems for the next president to deal with it.

Watergate Scandal Nixon sent spies over to the opposite party to gain info on what the democrats would use in their campaign by the committee to re-elect Nixon. Even when he was caught and a percentage of the U.S knew about the Watergate Scandal the main highlight and end result was that Nixon had won the election by a LANDSLIDE. He won by the 4th largest margin in American history. Nixon did what he did out of paranoia and even with a percentage of Americans knowing what Nixon tried to do (watergate) America still voted for him and still would have voted for him. What Nixon did was wrong a cheap way to try to rig a election but his plan at Watergate failed. He lied to the American public but what I am trying to say is that it was a lie that wasn't needed because looking at the result of the electoral college Nixon would have won regardless.

Nixon made a mistake and tried to abuse his powers but I have to ask you guys what great president hasn't tried to do that?
Abraham Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus and imprisoned many innocent people for speaking
Franklin D Roosevelt had the court packing system which showed he was trying to gain more power than he was allowed.
Ronald Reagan helped and gave money to the organization that would later be known today as Al Queda.(BAD)
Thomas Jefferson passed the Embargo Act
These are presidents who are all ranked according to the Gallop poll the top 10 presidents of the United States and they are all not perfect neither is Nixon.

Nixon was a president who made one mistake like other presidents who made many. Nixon's accomplishments in foreign policy giving us years of peace with the soviets, Civil rights and environmental policies should not be overshadowed by this one mistake when every other president (I named) gets praised for their accomplishments and having their mistakes ignored in history.

That map sure is red.

Okay first the rebuttal:

1. The fight against Communism was a noble one, no doubt, but if Nixon had truly been committed to wiping it out he should have stayed in Vietnam. My point wasn't he was wrong for staying in, but rather, that he was a fence sitter who wouldn't go either way.

2. I believe that you also agree that Watergate was lowly and a pathetic way to try to win an election. Not only were people caught breaking into the Watergate complex, but Nixon's administration was also charged with improper tax audits, fraud, illegal wire tapping, and bribery. Its not like he was drunk and said "Hey guys, lets prank the Democrats!" He knew very well and was involved in the scandal to a huge extent. Eventually in the Supreme Court case United States v. Nixon, the court voted unanimously for Nixon to give the tapes of his conversations over to evidence.

3. Now on to your President's argument.

-Lincoln had every right to suspend Habeus Corpus. In the U.S. Constitution, Article One Section Nine, it states "The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion, the public safety may require it." The nation was in a Civil War and the South was at their doorstep. I consider this an appropriate action to protect the public, because it was an extreme situation.

-Franklin D. Roosevelt did in fact try to pack the Supreme court with more justices, but the Constitution does not limit the number of people on the Supreme court so what he was doing may have been ethically questionable, but it was technically lawful.
-Ronald Reagan gave money to Afghanistan to fight the Soviet Union. Just like you said Nixon fought Communism, this was in fact designed to fight Communism. It is unfortunate that when the Soviet Union Afghanistan had no real government so it fell into the hands of Al Queda. This has nothing to do with Reagan.
- Jefferson's embargo act was not unlawful, and it was in retaliation for the British taking three Americans hostage.

So in the end, you cannot even come close to comparing Nixon to the great men listed above, though I refer to FDR as great cautiously.

As for the whole map being red, you do realize the President you are defending was Republican.

The things that president Lincoln and FDR and etc did are not agreed to as right by a lot of people. Your not going to find alot of people jumping to the fact that Lincoln put people in jail for no reason because he thought it was good for them. The people in jail didn't think that way. Majority of the people do not even remember the flaws in our great presidents they just remember the good they did.

Nixon dose not have that luxury he will forever be looked at for the Watergate scandal. If you look at all Nixon has accomplished for the people in America I think it can outweigh what he tried to do to win a election in a America who was already favoring Nixon during that time.
Nixon gave us a time of peace with the Soviet Union easing tensions with China.
Nixon gave signed off on so many bills for civil rights so women could be treated equally in this world like men do.
Nixon worked hard to desegregate schools and he did so decreasing the numbers in all black schools.
Nixon's environmental policies were also a revolution to better our environment.
These are the events that are not shown or highlighted as much in his presidency.

So think about the majority of the products that comes to America that come from china thats from Nixon.
Nondiscrimination when getting a job is because of Nixon.
You have clean water and air is because of Nixon.
The good Nixon did during his presidency greatly affects us today in a positive manner and i say any president who does that is a good one.

The final argument:

-It is true, Nixon did indeed do a few good things, but a majority of what he did was downright illegal. In all the examples you brought up the President's questions were definitely questionable as to whether they were ethical, but none of the Presidents broke the law.
-Nixon flat out broke several laws including improper auditing, illegal wire tapping, accomplice to breaking and entering, spying, and fraud, not to mention lying about all of these things and then planning on committing perjury. Just as two wrongs don't make a right, so it is that a few good acts do not justify all the criminal acts that Nixon committed. Many far greater and lesser men and women than Nixon will be remembered unjustly for things they did not do, and have their reputations forever tarnished. Nixon actually did do all of the things he was accused of, so he therefore deserves the ridicule that comes with it. Giving him anything less would be unjust.

An unfortunate debate. Both sides missed some of the key aspects of their sides.

conduct: Tie
Both sides were adequately courteous
sp/gr: Tie
No major problems from either. Neither was particularly eloquent, either.
arguments: Pro
Con allowed Nixon's foreign policy record to remain prestigious despite the numerous angles that could be used to undermine Pro's position. Additionally, Con relied on watergate speaking for itself without explaining why it is an important consideration for this topic.
sources: Tie
Neither side used a single source in this issue that has an abundance of material.

ZT, his personal views on abortion are irrelevant; he never took any actions for or against it.

I beg to differ...

http://www.nytimes.com...

"Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster "permissiveness," and said that "it breaks the family." But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases — like interracial pregnancies, he said.

'There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,' he told an aide, before adding, 'Or a rape.'"
