If you accept this debate you are taking that stance that there should be a prohibition on drugs and that the war on drugs is succeeding. You will need to provide some form of proof for claims that you make.
I accept this debate. I will be arguing that there should be a prohibition on drugs, and I will post my first argument during this round.
Claim: Drugs cause harm to many people and also animals.
Proof: The website, http://www.addaction.org.uk... states, "When drugs get into the bloodstream they are carried to all parts of the body and some reach the brain. The quicker the drug reaches the brain, the more intense the effects. ...Once in the brain drugs affect chemicals called neurotransmitters. These are the chemicals that control the flow of information within the brain between the neurons or brain cells, forming a synapse. Neurotransmitters also alter people's moods and feelings. Different drugs can affect different neurotransmitters. For example, ecstasy appears to affect a neurotransmitter called serotonin by reducing the amount of the chemical in the brain. Those people with lower levels of serotonin in the brain tend to suffer from depression and also there are concerns that taking too much ecstasy for too long might make a person chronically depressed.
Experiments with animals have shown that certain drugs like ecstasy can damage brain cells but experts are not agreed on whether this happens with humans to the same extent. There have been concerns about damage to the brain from taking a wide range of drugs including ecstasy, LSD and solvents but the evidence is, so far, inconclusive."
As you can see the use of drugs will cause horrible damage to the human body. Because of this a prohibition on drugs should be in place.
Your explanation of the effects dugs have is actually very accurate but on the same token there are countless examples of legal drugs that are prescribed that can cause damage as well. Many anti-depressants actually cause the depression to become worse often times leading to suicidal thoughts. Pain killers and muscle relaxers cause many of their legal users into addicts whose consumption spirals out of control and ruins their lives. Many drugs taken for cancer or aids patients have DEATH as a side effect on the label. Theses are drugs that are completely legal with a prescription and yet they can cause more damage than the ailment they were being used to treat. People taking these often times have to take other prescriptions to counter another. The fact of the matter is prescription drugs carry many of the same risks as illegal ones when abused.
These reasons are all the more reason to continue the prohibition on drugs. So many illnesses and other horrible things from happening to people. If we were a little more demanding with the prohibition, then all of this could be prevented. Less people would end up damaged in ways most people are too scared of to imagine. This is not something to be looked upon with happiness. Drugs should not be accepted, and those ho do accept them need to think twice about the decision that they are making.
Marijuana is used to treat over 230 illnesses by prescription. No other drugs is used to treat such a wide variety of illnesses. The prohibition has been proven to be a waste of tax payer money as well as the lives of law enforcement. Prohibition causes the drugs to be pushed to the underground market which creates criminal enterprises. People might think that prohibition is effective but the opposite has proven to be true. Im not suggesting that drugs not have rules and regulations they should be treated the same as alcohol.
I watched the following videos. I must agree, and say that the prohibition is not all that amazing. But in the videos, it also showed that legalizing it is not the best either. Most underground drug deals are stopped. Those that are not, are simply very few. Those people who do the illegal drugs are often times taking into court, and convicted of there crimes. It is not the answer to all of our problems, but it does help to stop many bad things from happening.
Prohibition was a great idea in many ways and at its conception im sure that it seemed like the only solution but history has only shown it makes things worse. I don't think anyone should use a drug like cocaine or heroin but it is simply impossible to stop someone from getting the drug. It can't be done and so we have to deal with the situation in the most efficient way possible and that is not prohibition. Were every drug to be legalized the only people that would do these drugs are the ones who were doing them while they were illegal.
An understandable fear but many people thought the same of the alcohol prohibition but as is the case with most things in life their fears were worse than reality. If prohibition yielded more promising results I might see justification in continuing with it. Even if the prohibition is lifted people will not be allowed to just run rampant through public places getting high and causing chaos. There will be designated places such as their is with alcohol. People are allowed to smoke cigarettes, east fast food, and drink like a fish and all three of those things are proven to be extremely bad for your health. Their legal because 1. mega companies make a fortune off of them and 2. It is up to the individual on what they put in their body. This really comes down to ones freedom to choose for themselves. People don't like having the government tell them what they can do with their body.
Perhaps that is the truth. But certain people, and that is meaning all of those who do bad now, illegally, and with medication, will continue to do this with a freedom, and more people will do this because it is natural for people to copy what they see. Everyone will begin to do this, and eventually, the entire world could become a drug world. Everyone doing drugs, would not be a happy world.
I agree that it is up to the pupil as far as what they want to do to their body, but it is the government's job to do what is best for the majority of the population. And just like with alcohol and cigarettes, people would do it in places where they are not supposed to no matter what.
Also the companies that make a profit off of this, could convert to making something else that is just as appealing as the bad stuff.
This is my conclusion to the debate. Thanks to my opponent for his time, and the debate. I had fun.
