For this debate I will be arguing that proportional representation is more democratic than the current first-past-the-post or majority representation system. My opponent will need to argue that this is not the case.

Definitions

FPTP (First-past-the-post) - an electoral system in which a relatively large number of constituencies elect a single MP to represent them in parliament.

Proportional representation - an electoral system is which a relatively small number of constituencies elect a number of MP's, potentially from different parties, to represent them in parliament.

First round is for acceptance.

Democracy is rule by majority so majority representation is more democratic.

Just to clarify that we're on the same page here Con, I'm assuming you don't think I'm arguing against majority rule as the core tenet of democracy? Proportional representation is just a voting system - it still results in the rule of a majority, just a more accurately represented one. Are you OK to debate on these grounds?

Depends what country you are talking about. The US has a proportional system, but the standards you refer to may be different.
