Let me start out by saying that I myself do not condone this economic activity, but am arguing this topic to challenge myself.

Prostitution is one of the oldest professions in the world. It involves selling the resources one has (in this case a sexual performance) for their own monetary gain. It is a way to make use of one's own resources and empower women to, in some cases, support their families and gain a sense of freedom.

The rape rate in the United States would decrease because some women con men by saying they are prostitutes, selling themselves illegally, and claiming they were raped in order to gain a small fortune in a legal suit. Kirby R. Cundiff PhD, Associate Professor of Finance at Northwestern State University and author of "Prostitution and Sex Crimes" written published April 8, 2004, states "It is estimated that if prostitution were legalized in the United States, the rape rate would decrease by roughly 25% for a decrease of approximately 25,000 rapes per year...."

Prostitution would increase tax revenue. By taxing prostitution, the United States government would gain money for infrastructure, aiding the public, not to mention relieving debts associate with the current recession.

Prostitution would give employees of the field a sense of economic freedom. It would give them a sense that they can work for themselves and run their own business by using their own resources.

Also, those who rape prostitutes, could be charged with not only rape and sexual assault, but also shoplifting or stealing due to the stealing of another's property.

Before I start I would like to give the definition of prostitute
Prostitute: to sell the services of (oneself or another) for purposes of sexual intercourse my definition of given by http://www.yourdictionary.com...

Alright, allow me to start off by saying that if a person decides to engage with a prostitute, knowing that there is a risk she or he could file for rape then he deserves justly. And secondly by engaging with a prostitute that person is also breaking the law, so in fact he or she is being brought to justice.

My opponent states that "Prostitution would give employees of the field a sense of economic freedom." But you cant forget about all the young men and women forced into prostitution by other people.

Also with the recent elevation of AIDS prostitution has become dangerous for not only the prostitute but also the customer.

Prostitutes have also had a history of stealing, beating, and even kidnapping the people that pay for their services.

And the fact that my opponent has stated "those who rape prostitutes, could be charged with not only rape and sexual assault, but also shoplifting due to the stealing of anthers property." It could be considered rape and only rape due to the fact that when having sex with somebody without their consent they cannot be considered a prostitute during the period of the crime.

I will start with attacks on my opponents argument, followed by additional points.

"Alright, allow me to start off by saying that if a person decides to engage with a prostitute, knowing that there is a risk she or he could file for rape then he deserves justly."

A customer of a prostitute in a location where prostitution is legal shouldn't fear being charged with rape if a simple transaction takes place. It is like fearing walking into a convenience store because there is a risk that the owner could falsely accuse you of robbery.

"And secondly by engaging with a prostitute that person is also breaking the law, so in fact he or she is being brought to justice."

In some localities, such as Rhode Island and 11 counties in Nevada prostitution is legal under certain guidelines.
http://prostitution.procon.org...
So if prostitution is made legal or if prostitution exists in localities where it is legal, there is no reason for the customer to be arrested.

"Also with the recent elevation of AIDS prostitution has become dangerous for not only the prostitute but also the customer."

AIDS is a risk that comes with any sexual encounter. In any case, the customer should wear a condom. It's like not wearing a protected suit when bee-keeping. There is a chance you won't get stung, but you wear the suit to protect yourself anyway because there is a greater chance you will. Additionally, it is not very smart for a prostitute to have sex without a condom because of the risk of destroying their resources. If a prostitute catches AIDS or some other STD, she/he is forced to have very limited business or no business at all. Not many are willing to have sexual relations with one who has STDs.

"Prostitutes have also had a history of stealing, beating, and even kidnapping the people that pay for their services."

Could you verify your source? As far as I know, there haven't been many cases of prostitutes stealing, beating, or kidnapping customers.

"And the fact that my opponent has stated "those who rape prostitutes, could be charged with not only rape and sexual assault, but also shoplifting due to the stealing of anthers property." It could be considered rape and only rape due to the fact that when having sex with somebody without their consent they cannot be considered a prostitute during the period of the crime."

Again, could you verify your source? I know of no law stating one cannot be considered any occupation when being raped.

I will now bring forth some additional points:

If prostitution is legalized, laws can be created to keep prostitutes in check, such as weekly STD screenings and required condoms as in the state of Nevada. "According to Nevada state law all prostitutes must use a condom, and must be tested weekly for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and monthly for HIV. Brothel owners and prostitutes are required to be licensed and registered, and to pass a background check." as stated in several Nevada counties' laws (http://prostitution.procon.org...)

Some go to prostitutes so their wives (or husbands) are not pressured to perform sexually for their spouse. In some cases, if the spouse agrees, it actually aids a couple's marriage as it eases sexual pressure.

Very interestion. I am also waiting to see how this goes. Legalize it, create brothels, give medical coverage, create a medical qualification standard. People will continue to prostitute themselves and they will always have customers. Might as will put some government behind it.
